Abuja, Nigeria – May 1, 2025 — As nations around the globe celebrate International Workers’ Day, TAFAfrica, a leading disability inclusion advocacy organization, has issued a powerful call for inclusive labour practices that fully recognize the rights and potential of persons with disabilities in Nigeria and beyond.
In a stirring statement released to commemorate May Day 2025, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of TAFAfrica, Dr. Jake Epelle, paid glowing tribute to the dedication, resilience, and contributions of workers—especially those with disabilities—who continue to break barriers and redefine excellence in diverse sectors of the economy.
“Workers with disabilities are not liabilities—they are assets to our workforce and our future. Inclusion is not charity, it is justice,” Dr. Epelle declared.
TAFAfrica’s May Day message is more than a celebration—it is a resounding reminder of the urgent need to enforce inclusive labour policies, promote accessibility in work environments, and dismantle systemic discrimination that continues to sideline millions of qualified Nigerians living with disabilities.
The organization specifically called for the strict implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, which was signed into law in 2019, noting that its moratorium has elapsed, yet access to employment opportunities and inclusive workplace policies remain a challenge for many persons with disabilities.
According to TAFAfrica, achieving inclusive development is impossible without recognizing the economic potential of persons with disabilities. The organization urged both public institutions and private enterprises to take bold steps toward building inclusive systems—ones that are accessible, equitable, and committed to the ideals of dignity, justice, and opportunity for all.
“As we honour the labour force today, we must not forget that the true strength of a nation lies in how it uplifts its most marginalized citizens,” Dr. Epelle added.
The statement also emphasized the importance of social protection measures, reasonable accommodation in workplaces, and awareness campaigns to eliminate bias and stigma against workers with disabilities.
TAFAfrica reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to advancing decent work, inclusive economic growth, and equal opportunity for all workers. The organization continues to drive initiatives that support employment, entrepreneurship, and policy reform for persons with disabilities across Nigeria and Africa.
As the May Day celebrations continue, TAFAfrica encourages all stakeholders—governments, employers, labour unions, and civil society—to move beyond rhetoric and take concrete actions that will make the workplace a truly inclusive and empowering space for everyone.
