In a development that has generated excitement among supporters and advocates of inclusive governance, a prominent politician and person with disability, Abdulrahman Awal, has emerged as the flag bearer of the New Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Bida, Gbako, and Katcha Federal Constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Awal secured the party’s ticket during the NDC primary election held on May 29, 2026, marking a significant milestone not only in his political journey but also in the growing participation of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeria’s democratic process.

In a public statement issued following his emergence, Awal expressed profound gratitude to Almighty Allah, the leadership of the party, delegates, supporters, friends, and well-wishers who contributed to his victory.

According to him, the nomination represents more than a personal achievement, describing it as a collective victory built on trust, sacrifice, prayers, and unwavering support from the people who believe in his vision for effective representation.

“I receive this nomination with a deep sense of responsibility and humility,” Awal stated. “This achievement is not mine alone. It is the result of the trust, prayers, sacrifices, and steadfast support of party members, delegates, supporters, friends, and well-wishers.”

Quoting from the Holy Qur’an, he emphasized the importance of gratitude and divine guidance in leadership, noting that every success comes with a greater responsibility to serve humanity.

Political observers have described Awal’s emergence as a notable step toward strengthening disability inclusion in Nigeria’s political landscape. His candidacy reflects increasing recognition of the capabilities and leadership potential of Persons with Disabilities in public service and governance.

Throughout his political engagements, Awal has consistently championed issues relating to transparency, accountability, accessibility, inclusion, and responsive representation. He reaffirmed that these principles would remain at the heart of his campaign and future legislative agenda.

“This nomination does not change my commitments; rather, it deepens my obligation to serve with integrity, fairness, and dedication,” he said.

He further pledged to pursue people-oriented policies that would address the developmental needs of the constituency while ensuring that no segment of society is left behind, particularly vulnerable groups and persons with disabilities.

The NDC flag bearer also extended appreciation to the delegates who participated in the primary election process, commending them for their confidence in his leadership and vision. He noted that their support has strengthened his determination to work tirelessly toward delivering quality representation for the people of Bida, Gbako, and Katcha.

Awal stressed that gratitude remains an essential ingredient of leadership, adding that recognizing the contributions of others helps build stronger relationships and inspires collective commitment toward achieving common goals.

As preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum, he called on constituents across the three local government areas to remain united and focused on the shared aspiration of progress, development, and inclusive governance.

Addressing the people of the constituency directly, Awal assured them that their trust would never be taken for granted.

“To the good people of Bida, Gbako, and Katcha Federal Constituency, I sincerely appreciate your support and confidence. I hold your trust in the highest esteem and will continue to work toward earning it every day. I seek your continued prayers, counsel, and support as we journey together toward a successful general election and, by the grace of Allah, a future of effective and people-centered representation.”

His emergence has already sparked conversations among political stakeholders and disability rights advocates, many of whom see his candidacy as a symbol of growing political inclusion and a reminder that leadership is determined by competence, vision, and commitment rather than physical limitations.

As the race toward the 2027 general elections intensifies, all eyes will be on Abdulrahman Awal and his campaign as he seeks to translate the confidence reposed in him by his party into electoral victory and meaningful representation for the people of Bida, Gbako, and Katcha Federal Constituency.
