SCIAN Kano Marks International Spinal Cord Injury Day With Awareness, Solidarity and Support for Members

By TQM News,

The Spinal Cord Injuries Association of Nigeria (SCIAN), Kano State Chapter, has commemorated the International Spinal Cord Injury Day with a colourful and impactful gathering that combined awareness, education, social interaction and practical support for persons living with spinal cord injuries.

The celebration, held on September 5, 2026, at the association’s newly acquired office compound in Kano, brought members together in an atmosphere of unity, friendship and renewed commitment to improving the lives of people living with spinal cord injuries.

Rather than limiting the occasion to speeches and formal ceremonies, SCIAN Kano used the day to create a space where members could connect, share experiences, learn from one another and strengthen the bonds that hold the spinal cord injury community together.

Raising Awareness Through Education

One of the major highlights of the celebration was a series of lectures designed to increase awareness and deepen members’ understanding of issues affecting people living with spinal cord injuries.

The educational sessions provided an opportunity for participants to discuss their experiences, exchange knowledge and reflect on the challenges that often accompany spinal cord injury, including healthcare needs, rehabilitation, social inclusion and the importance of community support.

For SCIAN Kano, the commemoration was not simply about marking a date on the calendar. It was also an opportunity to remind society that spinal cord injury can dramatically alter a person’s life, while appropriate healthcare, rehabilitation, assistive devices, family support and an inclusive society can make a significant difference.

A Day of Friendship, Family and Community

The celebration also featured a family and friends get-together, allowing members to step away from the everyday challenges associated with living with spinal cord injury and simply enjoy one another’s company.

Fun games and other recreational activities added colour to the event, creating an atmosphere of laughter, friendship and togetherness.

The gathering was particularly significant as it took place at SCIAN Kano’s new office compound. Members had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the new environment and collectively celebrate what the new space represents for the association.

The office is expected to provide a stronger platform for members to meet, organize activities, advocate for their rights and pursue initiatives aimed at improving the wellbeing and inclusion of people living with spinal cord injuries in Kano State.

Medical Support for Members

In a practical demonstration of solidarity, consumable medical items were distributed to members during the celebration.

The gesture was aimed at providing support for members’ healthcare and daily needs, recognizing that persons living with spinal cord injuries often require ongoing medical attention and essential supplies.

Beyond the material value of the items distributed, the gesture sent an important message: members of the association are not alone in their journey.

For many people living with spinal cord injuries, access to appropriate healthcare and essential medical supplies can be a major challenge. Initiatives that provide direct support therefore remain an important part of building a stronger and more resilient spinal cord injury community.

Strengthening the SCIAN Community

Speaking on the significance of the celebration, Abdulrahman Uba Daushe, Chairman of SCIAN Kano State Chapter, emphasized the importance of bringing members together to strengthen relationships and create an environment where people can share their experiences and support one another.

The event provided members with an opportunity to reconnect, exchange personal experiences and encourage one another in their individual journeys.

It also demonstrated the importance of peer support among people living with spinal cord injuries. While medical rehabilitation is crucial, emotional support, friendship, community participation and a sense of belonging can equally play an important role in helping individuals adapt to life after spinal cord injury.

Beyond One Day of Celebration

The International Spinal Cord Injury Day celebration may have lasted for only a day, but its message extends far beyond September 5.

Spinal cord injury can happen suddenly—through road traffic crashes, falls, acts of violence, sports injuries, workplace accidents and other circumstances. When it happens, the consequences can extend to mobility, employment, education, healthcare, family life and social participation.

This makes awareness and preparedness essential.

The SCIAN Kano celebration therefore served as both a moment of celebration and a reminder of the need for continued action to ensure that people living with spinal cord injuries have access to rehabilitation, healthcare, assistive technology, accessible environments, employment opportunities and the opportunity to live with dignity.

As members gathered at their new office, shared meals, played games, exchanged experiences and received medical supplies, the message was clear: life after spinal cord injury can still be meaningful, productive and full of hope when individuals are supported and included.

The celebration ultimately reflected the spirit of International Spinal Cord Injury Day—raising awareness, strengthening solidarity and reminding society that persons living with spinal cord injuries deserve not pity, but dignity, opportunity, support and inclusion.
