Two-Day Event Focuses on Inclusive Political Participation and Leadership Development
In a bid to foster inclusive political participation and enhance the leadership skills of persons with disabilities (PWDs), the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) recently organized a two-day capacity building workshop titled “Leadership and Effective Participation in Politics for Persons with Disabilities.” The event, held with the support of Voice, aimed to increase the representation and participation of PWDs in governance.
The workshop, attended by notable PWDs in politics, relevant stakeholders, and members of the media, commenced with a dynamic presentation on Day 1. Mr. Kayode Afolabi Adeleye led the session, delving into the essence of effective leadership and the essential skills required for political leadership. Drawing from his personal experiences and examples of PWDs in political positions, Adeleye inspired participants to embrace their potential and navigate the political landscape with confidence.
Following Adeleye’s presentation was an engaging experience sharing session led by Mr. Agbabiaka Yusuf, who shared insights into overcoming political hurdles. As a former Ward Councilor, Yusuf provided valuable perspectives on political participation, inspiring attendees with his journey of perseverance and determination.
Day 2 of the workshop commenced with a lively recap and opening rituals, setting the stage for two enriching presentations. Comrade Adewale Ayodele facilitated a session on “Effective Participation in Politics and Governance,” providing participants with foundational knowledge essential for engaging in political processes at all levels. This was followed by Mrs. Temilade Akinade’s presentation on “Joining a Political Party: The Processes and Requirements,” offering practical insights into the pathways for PWDs to become active members of political parties.
The culminating moment of the workshop came with a closing remark delivered by The Interim Head, CCD, Mrs. Florence Austin, expressing gratitude to participants for their active engagement throughout the sessions. Austin urged attendees to maintain their commitment, resilience, and determination in pursuing their political aspirations, emphasizing the importance of their voices and contributions in shaping inclusive governance.
The project, spearheaded by the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) and supported by Voice, stands as a testament to the ongoing efforts to empower PWDs and promote their meaningful participation in political processes. As the workshop concluded, participants departed with renewed vigor, equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to effect positive change in the political landscape.
