NCPWD Partners with NIPOST for Effective Distribution of Disability Certificates

In a bid to ensure the effective distribution of Disability Certificates across Nigeria, the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has pledged to leverage the extensive network coverage of the Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST).

Dr. James Lalu, the Executive Secretary of the commission, made this announcement during a courtesy visit to the Post Master General, Tola Odeyemi, at her office in Abuja on Wednesday.

Lalu emphasized the importance of partnership with NIPOST in ensuring that persons with disabilities (PWDs) receive their certificates promptly. He highlighted NIPOST’s extensive presence across the 774 local government areas in Nigeria as a crucial asset in reaching PWDs, especially those residing in rural communities.

“We want to leverage on this wider network coverage to distribute these certificates because PWDs reside in rural communities across the country, so partnering with institutions like NIPOST would assist us in distributing those certificates,” said Lalu.

During the visit, Lalu also informed the Postmaster General about the existence of disability laws in Nigeria, including the Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) Prohibition Act 2018, whose enforcement is set to commence soon.

He urged NIPOST to ensure compliance with relevant disability laws, including the provision stipulating that five percent of employment opportunities in public establishments must be reserved for PWDs.

“The entire part of the law is explicit about the provisions of access to public infrastructure and buildings in the specific mode and measurements,” emphasized Lalu.

In response, the Postmaster General, Tola Odeyemi, affirmed NIPOST’s commitment to promoting inclusivity for Persons with Disabilities. She assured the commission of NIPOST’s determination to assist in fulfilling its mandate and supporting efforts towards advocating for the enforcement of the rights of PWDs.

“We will play a critical role in ensuring that we provide a platform for promoting inclusivity for Persons with Disabilities,” stated Odeyemi.

The partnership between NCPWD and NIPOST signifies a significant step towards improving accessibility and inclusion for PWDs in Nigeria. By leveraging NIPOST’s extensive network, the distribution of Disability Certificates is expected to become more efficient, ensuring that PWDs across the country can access their entitlements without barriers.
