VDI engages Stakeholders in Nasarawa State to prioritize inclusion of women with disabilities

On Tuesday, July 5th 2022, Voice of Disability Initiative (VDI) embarked on an advocacy visits to stakeholders in Keffi which included the Medical Director of Federal Medical Centre Keffi and the Keffi Local Government Chairman.

The advocacy visit is part of VDI project supported by Disability Rights Fund, a disability rights advancement international organization with headquarter in Boston USA.

The VDI team led by ED Barr Catherine Edeh were able to meet the assistant to the Medical Director who welcomed the group.

Mrs Asaba, who was the focal person introduced the team and the purpose of the visit was presented by Barr Catherine Edeh, who emphasized on the fact that inclusion of women and girls with disabilities should be prioritized in the community, she went on with expressing the right to promote equal accessibility in the medical centre and medical services, as well as on public buildings and structures.

After the discussion, we were assured that the issues raised by the team will be tabled at the board meeting.

At the local government office, the VDI team were well received, after the introduction, Barr Edeh in her habit again prioritized her concerns for women and girls with disabilities on sexual reproductive health and right, employment, empowerment and education.

She described how women and girls with disability are being termed as sexual objects, she cited an example of a 78-year-old blind woman who was a rape victim at that old age coupled with the fact she is blind.

She buttressed the reasons to sensitize our community to prioritised inclusion, especially for women and girls with disability.

The council members expressed their willingness to be part of the training and their readiness to join in advancing inclusion in Keffi.
