VDI Advances Access to Justice for Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria

In a momentous stride for disability inclusion advocacy, the Voice of Disability Initiative (VDI) has brought its cause directly to the forefront, engaging with the esteemed Hon. Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, at his office.

On the Friday 23rd, February, 2024, the VDI delegation, led by Executive Director Barr Catherine Edeh, was graciously received by Barr. Yewande Gbola-Awopetu, the Head of the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Unit of the Ministry.

During this high-profile meeting, key areas of collaboration were identified to address the challenges faced by persons with disabilities. One of the pressing issues discussed was the shortage of Sign Language Interpreters, emphasizing the urgent need to bridge this crucial gap. Additionally, there was a focus on Capacity Building for Legal Officers in Sign Language and joint advocacy efforts to ensure public structures are accessible to persons with disabilities.

The gathering underscored the vital importance of collective action and partnerships in the ongoing battle against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), as well as the promotion of gender equality and social justice. These shared objectives serve as the foundation for collaborative efforts between VDI and the Ministry.

Barr Catherine Edeh, expressing gratitude on behalf of VDI, commended the Hon. Attorney General of the Federation and the Head of the SGBV Response Unit for their warm reception.
