Transport Minister Senator Alkali, Raises Concerns Over Lack of Accessibility For PWDs at Kubwa Train Station

In a surprise inspection, the Minister of Transportation, Senator Saidu Ahmed Alkali, has voiced serious concerns regarding the design and maintenance of the Kubwa Train Station in Abuja, particularly its lack of accessibility for persons with physical disabilities and the elderly. This inspection comes amid growing concerns over the station’s ability to serve all segments of the population effectively, especially those with mobility challenges.

Vandalism and Power Outage

The Minister’s visit to the Kubwa Train Station was initially prompted by reports of vandalism that had disrupted the main power supply from the national grid, plunging the station into darkness. This act of vandalism has forced the station to rely on alternative power sources, significantly hampering its operations. Senator Alkali urged the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) and the station manager to work swiftly with the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to restore the power supply and to implement measures to enhance the security of the facility.

Accessibility Concerns for Persons with Disabilities and the Elderly

During his inspection, Senator Alkali identified several design flaws that pose challenges for passengers with physical disabilities and the elderly. One of the most glaring issues was the staircase used by passengers disembarking from trains arriving at Kubwa from Rigasa. The staircase, as it stands, is not conducive for those with mobility impairments, making it difficult for them to access train services.

The Minister expressed his dissatisfaction with the station’s current infrastructure and directed the Director of Rail Services to take immediate action. He emphasized that modifications must be made at the ministerial level, involving the NRC and the contractor, to ensure that the station is fully accessible to all passengers, regardless of their physical abilities.

Operational and Security Concerns

Beyond accessibility, Senator Alkali also highlighted several operational inefficiencies at the Kubwa Train Station. He was notably dismayed by the absence of many staff members from their duty posts and the general state of disrepair within the station. The luggage security scanners were inactive, and the communication equipment was non-functional, raising serious concerns about the station’s ability to provide adequate services and ensure passenger safety.

The Minister was particularly concerned about the station’s car park, which has been poorly maintained. The car park is riddled with potholes, exacerbated by floodwaters, further complicating access for passengers.

A Call for Comprehensive Reforms

In his concluding remarks, Senator Alkali reiterated the need for comprehensive reforms to address the various shortcomings at the Kubwa Train Station. He assured that the Ministry of Transportation, in collaboration with the NRC and relevant contractors, would take the necessary steps to rectify these issues and enhance the station’s functionality.

“We have taken note of several facilities that should serve the users of the station. We will be retreating to the office to do the needful at the level of the ministry, the Railway Corporation, and of course, the contractor, to see how we can fix these facilities,” Senator Alkali stated.

The Minister’s proactive stance underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure is inclusive, efficient, and capable of meeting the needs of all citizens. As the country continues to expand its railway network, the emphasis on accessibility and quality service will be crucial in achieving a transportation system that is truly for everyone.
