TALI Unveiled: A Bold Step Towards Advancing Disability Rights and Inclusion in Nigeria

In a historic move towards fostering an inclusive society, The Ability Life Initiative (TALI) was officially unveiled on Thursday, February 20, 2025. The initiative, founded by sisters Prada Uzodimma and Oprah Uzodimma Ohaeri, is dedicated to enhancing the fundamental rights of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeria.

The grand unveiling event, which brought together key stakeholders from various sectors, marked the beginning of a new chapter in the fight against discrimination and exclusion of PWDs. With a resounding message of empowerment and inclusion, TALI seeks to create an environment where disability is not a limitation but a recognized aspect of human diversity.

A Vision for a More Inclusive Society

Speaking at the event, co-founder Prada Uzodimma emphasized that the inspiration behind TALI stemmed from a deep conviction that PWDs deserve more than just survival—they deserve opportunities to thrive.

“What PWDs need is not charity, but access—access to healthcare, employment, education, and an environment that allows them to showcase their abilities. More importantly, they need a society that embraces them without discrimination,” she asserted.

Uzodimma further highlighted that for years, TALI has been working tirelessly to break barriers, influence policies, and empower communities to embrace disability inclusion. The unveiling of TALI, she said, serves as a reaffirmation of their commitment to driving meaningful change in Nigeria.

“Our mission is clear—to ensure optimal healthcare, end discrimination, and advance the fundamental rights of PWDs. Our vision is to see a world where PWDs are recognized not by what they lack but by what they can achieve,” she stated.

Three Pillars of TALI’s Strategy

Uzodimma outlined the three core pillars that will guide TALI’s approach to achieving its goals:

  1. Advocacy: Ensuring full implementation of disability laws and policies, pushing for PWD representation in decision-making processes, and holding authorities accountable.
  2. Empowerment: Providing education, skill acquisition, and economic opportunities to enable PWDs to lead independent and fulfilling lives.
  3. Inclusion: Promoting a society where disability is seen as part of human diversity and ensuring that access to opportunities is a fundamental right, not a privilege.

Impact Already Being Felt

Despite being formally launched in 2025, TALI has already been making significant strides in disability advocacy and support. The organization has:

  • Conducted Inclusive Education Workshops in schools, training teachers and students on disability learning techniques.
  • Led Health Initiatives, including dermatological care awareness programs for persons with albinism.
  • Championed Advocacy for Accessible Public Spaces, working to ensure buildings and facilities comply with accessibility regulations.

Call for Collective Action

Uzodimma used the event as a rallying call, urging both the public and private sectors to take responsibility in creating an inclusive society. She emphasized that disability inclusion should not be left solely to the government or NGOs but should be a shared responsibility.

“Each of us, regardless of our profession, has a role to play. We must commit ourselves to employing PWDs, building accessible schools, ensuring budget allocations for disability issues, and eliminating barriers to inclusion,” she declared.

A Resounding Endorsement from the Government

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, represented by Hon. Bashiru Dawodu, Chairman of the House Committee on Disabilities, commended TALI’s mission, stating that it aligns perfectly with the National Assembly’s commitment to enforcing disability rights laws.

He highlighted steps already taken by the legislature to ensure compliance with accessibility regulations, including the introduction of sign language interpretation at plenary sessions and an ongoing accessibility audit of the National Assembly complex.

Insightful Panel Discussion and Keynote Presentations

A major highlight of the event was a panel discussion on “Bridging the Gap: Advancing Disability Rights and Inclusion in Nigeria.” Moderated by disability inclusion expert Stephen Idoko, the session featured contributions from government officials, disability rights advocates, and other experts.

International Human Rights and Development Expert, Mr. Hillary Ogbonna, delivered a compelling presentation on the fundamental rights of PWDs, the importance of inclusive policies, and the urgent need for collective action to foster accessibility, equity, and empowerment.

The event also saw keynote addresses from dignitaries such as:

  • Hon. Imaan Sulaiman Ibrahim, Minister of Women Affairs
  • Rt. Hon. Barr. Nkeiruka Chidubem Onyejeocha, Minister of State for Labour and Employment
  • Other high-ranking officials, disability advocates, and policy influencers.

Official Unveiling of TALI

The climax of the event was the official launch of TALI, conducted by the dignitaries present. It symbolized a new dawn for disability inclusion in Nigeria, with attendees reaffirming their commitment to making society more accessible and equitable for all.

The gathering, which included PWDs, representatives of Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), government officials, politicians, business leaders, and advocates, resonated with a singular message: to create a society where everyone is given the opportunity to thrive, irrespective of their abilities.

TALI’s Ongoing Projects

As part of its ongoing work, TALI has initiated several impactful projects, including:

  • Skincare Sensitization and Outreach Program for Persons with Albinism (December 10, 2024)
  • TALI Tab Project at Government Secondary School (GSS), Kuje (June 28, 2024) – Aimed at improving communication accessibility for students with disabilities.
  • Interactive Workshop on Educational Disabilities at GSS Jabi, Abuja (June 17, 2022) – A workshop promoting inclusive education and disability learning strategies.

A New Era for Disability Inclusion

The unveiling of TALI marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s journey towards true disability inclusion. With a clear vision, a solid strategy, and a passionate team, the initiative is set to drive substantial change.

“Let this event mark the beginning of a new era for disability inclusion in Nigeria. Let TALI ignite a revolution for a more inclusive society. And let each of us be the driving force behind this change,” Uzodimma passionately declared.

With the collective efforts of government agencies, private organizations, and committed individuals, TALI’s mission to advance the rights and opportunities of PWDs is well on its way to becoming a reality.
