NCPWD partners NNAD, others to develop Nigerian Sign Language

National Commission of Persons with disabilities (NCPWD) in collaboration with the Nigeria National Association of the Deaf with support with the support of Disability Rights Fund organized an inaugural meeting for the development of Nigerian Sign Language.

The meeting held on 27th to 28th of September, 2021 in Kano.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission was handy at the event and according to him, Nigeria over the years have been using American Sign Language, it is high time, Nigeria Sign language is developed to carry along many Deaf persons in Nigeria who may be conversant with American sign language, there are many local sign language in different dialects in Nigeria, it would be nice if we can develop a unified Nigeria Sign Language that will put in consideration most of these local dialects and develop a sign language that every deaf person in Nigeria can understand.

The event which was organized with the cooperation of Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Nigeria (ASLIN), LionHeart Ability Leaders International Foundation (LALIF) among other is part of the celebration of International Week for the Deaf.
