Lagos State Reinforces Commitment to Empower People with Disabilities

In a resounding affirmation of its dedication to inclusivity, the Lagos State government has pledged unwavering support to individuals with disabilities. Ensuring a secure haven and access to rehabilitation services, the government is poised to tackle the pervasive issue of drug abuse within this community.

At a dynamic Town Hall meeting centered around ‘Healthcare Services and the Menace of Drug Abuse among People with Disabilities in Lagos State,’ Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, emphasized the societal responsibility to create healthcare systems that are not only inclusive but also tailored to the distinctive needs of individuals with disabilities.

Represented by Mr. Alabi Oladimeji, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Youth Mobilization, Commissioner Ogunlende underscored the paramount importance of recognizing the fundamental rights of every individual, regardless of their abilities. The government is resolute in dismantling barriers that hinder access to healthcare for people with disabilities and tackling the alarming issue of drug abuse.

The vulnerabilities faced by this demographic make them particularly susceptible to substance abuse, often as a coping mechanism for pain, isolation, or other challenges. Recognizing this, the Commissioner stressed the imperative nature of implementing preventive measures and establishing robust support systems.

“Education and awareness play a vital role in combating drug abuse. Through targeted campaigns and workshops, we aim to disseminate information about the risks associated with substance abuse, equip individuals with coping mechanisms, and empower them to make informed decisions,” he declared.

Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, General Manager of the Lagos State Office of Disability Affairs (LASODA), highlighted the collaborative efforts between various stakeholders as pivotal to achieving comprehensive and sustainable improvements in healthcare services for people with disabilities. She affirmed the commitment of the Lagos State government to reduce drug abuse among individuals facing challenges, emphasizing the need for proactive and sustainable measures.

Addressing the epidemic of drug abuse among people with disabilities, Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal urged parents to pay adequate attention to their children. Participants agreed on the necessity to sensitize families on managing children facing challenges at home.

Commending the Lagos State government for taking proactive and sustainable measures in tackling the menace, they expressed optimism that the ongoing deliberations would yield effective and efficient approaches to mark successes in combating drug abuse among people with disabilities in Lagos State.
