In a heartwarming effort to cushion the harsh effects of Nigeria’s worsening economic crisis, the Aredu Development and Empowerment Foundation has extended a lifeline to dozens of persons with disabilities and vulnerable youths in Osogbo, Osun State, through the distribution of food items and clothing.
The humanitarian outreach, which attracted beneficiaries from different parts of the state, was aimed at providing immediate relief to individuals and families struggling under the weight of rising inflation, unemployment, and increasing living costs.
Speaking during the distribution exercise, the Convener of the Foundation, Mr. Muritala Adebayo, expressed concern over the growing economic hardship confronting millions of Nigerians, particularly persons with disabilities who often face multiple layers of exclusion and disadvantage.
According to him, the current economic realities have further deepened the challenges faced by many persons with disabilities, making access to healthcare, education, transportation, and basic necessities increasingly difficult.
He noted that the intervention was part of the foundation’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations and restoring hope to those who have been disproportionately affected by the country’s economic downturn.
“Many persons with disabilities are facing enormous challenges daily. Beyond the general economic hardship affecting everyone, they contend with barriers to healthcare, education, mobility, employment opportunities, and social inclusion. This outreach is our modest contribution towards easing some of these burdens and reminding them that they are not forgotten,” Adebayo said.
The foundation distributed food supplies and clothing to more than 40 beneficiaries, bringing smiles to the faces of recipients who described the gesture as timely and impactful.
Adebayo stressed that while charitable interventions remain important, sustainable solutions require stronger collaboration among government institutions, private sector organisations, civil society groups, and concerned citizens.
He therefore called on governments at all levels, corporate bodies, development partners, and philanthropists to increase investments in programmes that promote the welfare, inclusion, and economic empowerment of persons with disabilities.
According to him, meaningful support should go beyond occasional donations and focus on creating opportunities that enable vulnerable individuals to become self-reliant and economically productive.
“We believe that supporting vulnerable people is not merely an act of charity; it is a responsibility that promotes social justice, inclusion, and economic empowerment. Every member of society deserves an opportunity to live with dignity and contribute meaningfully to national development,” he added.
The foundation further appealed to individuals and organisations willing to make a difference to support its activities through financial donations, skills acquisition programmes, equipment support, volunteer services, and strategic partnerships.
Adebayo emphasized that with collective action and sustained commitment, more vulnerable Nigerians can be reached and empowered to overcome socio-economic challenges.
He also expressed appreciation to the foundation’s sponsors and partners whose contributions made the outreach possible, singling out Oguntolu Akinlana Osunmurewa for his support towards the successful implementation of the programme.
For many beneficiaries, the intervention represented more than just food and clothing—it was a symbol of compassion, inclusion, and hope during difficult times.
One of the beneficiaries, Adeleke Adebambo, commended the foundation for remembering persons with disabilities at a time when many are struggling to survive.
He noted that despite years of advocacy for disability rights and inclusion, many persons with disabilities continue to experience neglect, discrimination, and limited access to opportunities.
Adebambo urged government authorities to move beyond policy pronouncements and ensure the effective implementation of programmes that create enabling environments for persons with disabilities.
“We appreciate this gesture because it shows that some people still care about the welfare of persons with disabilities. However, government must do more by implementing policies that guarantee accessibility, employment opportunities, social protection, and inclusion. Many of us still face enormous challenges despite ongoing advocacy efforts,” he said.
The outreach programme also served as a platform for renewed calls for greater disability inclusion and stronger social protection mechanisms amid Nigeria’s challenging economic climate.
As economic pressures continue to affect millions of households across the country, initiatives such as those of the Aredu Development and Empowerment Foundation are increasingly becoming a source of hope for vulnerable populations who often struggle to meet their daily needs.
Reaffirming its commitment to humanitarian service, the foundation pledged to continue implementing programmes that provide practical support, empowerment opportunities, and improved livelihoods for persons with disabilities and disadvantaged youths both within Nigeria and among diaspora communities.
With its inspiring message, “We rise by lifting others,” the foundation underscored the importance of compassion, solidarity, and collective responsibility in building a more inclusive society where no one is left behind.
