Disability Rights Fund Announces Transition in Leadership

In a bittersweet announcement, Disability Rights Fund (DRF) bids farewell to its visionary Executive Director, Catalina Devandas, as she embarks on a new chapter in her career. Catalina’s departure comes after years of dedicated and transformative leadership, leaving a lasting impact on the organization and the disability rights movement as a whole.

DRF’s Board of Directors has unanimously appointed Lorraine Wapling, the outgoing Board Co-Chair, as the Interim Executive Director to oversee the transition process. With her extensive involvement in DRF since its inception in 2008, Lorraine brings a wealth of experience and familiarity with the organization’s mission and values. Her stewardship as Co-Chair has been instrumental in supporting Catalina and the senior leadership team, making her a natural fit for the interim role.

Under Catalina’s guidance, DRF has achieved remarkable milestones, including the development of a bold new 5-year strategic plan and significant growth in organizational revenues. She has also strengthened internal systems and structures, laying a solid foundation for sustainable growth and impact. Catalina’s legacy includes the formation of a strong senior leadership team poised to implement DRF’s strategic vision with the expertise of its global staff.

The departure of Catalina marks a moment of transition for DRF, but it is also a time of excitement and anticipation for the organization’s future. With a talented team committed to collaboration, participation, and an intersectional approach, DRF is well-positioned to continue its mission of advocating for inclusive communities and empowering disability rights organizations in the Global South.

As DRF bids farewell to Catalina, the organization extends warm wishes for success in her new endeavors. Simultaneously, the team warmly welcomes Lorraine Wapling as the Interim Executive Director, expressing gratitude for her continued dedication and leadership.

Maria Ní Fhlatharta and Alberto Vásquez, Board Co-Chairs of Disability Rights Fund, convey their heartfelt appreciation to supporters and stakeholders for their unwavering trust and commitment to DRF’s mission. Together, they affirm their collective commitment to building a future where disability rights movements shape transformative agendas for justice and wellbeing.
