CCD Commemorates 5th Anniversary Of Passage of National Disability Act

Centre for citizens with disabilities (CCD) on Tuesday in Abuja Continental Hotels commemorate the 5th anniversary of the passage of the national disability law with the theme “beyond moratorium: setting agenda towards effective implementation of the national disability law”.

Mrs. Florence C. Austin Interim Head of Office in her welcome address extended her warm welcome to all participants government officers, OPDs CSOs MDAs and Media, for gathering to mark the significant milestone of the 5th anniversary of the passage of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities, also for their unwavering commitment to the cause of disability rights and development.

She said the journey and struggle that culmination in the enactment of the Act stretches over 17 years a testament of the persistent efforts and unwavering dedication of disability inclusion champions.

“We find ourselves at a crucial juncture, marking the conclusion of the transitory period”.

“Drawing inspiration from some words of our national anthem, which states that: “The labour of the heroes past shall never be in vain,” we acknowledge that the past 17 years were not solely about enacting a law but about fostering a Nigeria that upholds the dignity of persons with disabilities a nation that safeguards their rights, and a society free from discrimination.

“With the passage of this Act, it envision the an inclusive Nigeria is not just an aspiration; it is an achievable reality”.

Highlighting the commitment of CCD, she said that: “Over the past five years, diligent efforts have been invested in research, compliance monitoring, and advocacy programs aimed at influencing both governmental and private entities. Various training initiatives have sought to empower individuals and raise awareness about disability rights.

“However, despite these commendable efforts, the current realities faced by persons with disabilities PWDs in Nigeria demand a more profound approach and impactful transformation.

“The moratorium has ended, and now, accountability must be our watchword, and must prevail. Our vigilance must be unwavering, and as a United disability community, we must leverage the power of the law to ensure compliance.

“Together, we can dispel any notion that this legislation is toothless and through our collective efforts we can pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable Nigerian society”.
