In a bold move to strengthen self-advocacy and amplify the voices of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Nigeria, the Association for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities of Nigeria (AIDDN) has successfully concluded a two-day virtual Youth Advocacy Skills Training Programme held on April 22 and 23, 2026.
The impactful virtual workshop brought together young persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities from different backgrounds, equipping them with essential advocacy, communication, and digital engagement skills needed to confidently speak up for themselves and influence positive change within their communities.
The training, organized as part of AIDDN’s ongoing commitment to inclusion, empowerment, and rights-based advocacy, focused on building participants’ confidence, improving public speaking abilities, and enhancing their understanding of self-advocacy in both physical and digital spaces.
Throughout the interactive sessions, participants were exposed to practical lessons on effective communication, public speaking techniques, and digital advocacy strategies. Facilitators guided the participants on how to clearly express their thoughts, communicate their needs, challenge discrimination and injustice, and confidently engage decision-makers and society at large.
The workshop also provided a safe and encouraging environment where participants shared personal experiences, practiced advocacy presentations, and learned how to use digital platforms and social media tools to amplify their voices and advocacy messages to wider audiences.
Observers described the training as transformative, noting the remarkable improvement in the confidence, participation, and communication skills demonstrated by many of the young participants before the end of the programme.
For many participants, the workshop represented more than just a training session; it was an opportunity to rediscover their voices, overcome self-doubt, and embrace their roles as advocates for disability rights and inclusion.
Speaking on the significance of the programme, AIDDN reiterated its commitment to ensuring that persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities are not left behind in conversations around policy, leadership, education, accessibility, and social inclusion.
The organisation emphasized that empowering young persons with disabilities with advocacy skills is essential to building a society where everyone is respected, heard, and given equal opportunities to thrive.
The training further reinforced a powerful message that disability should never be a barrier to leadership, participation, or social impact. With the right support, confidence, and opportunities, persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities can become strong advocates capable of influencing policies, challenging stereotypes, and driving inclusive development in Nigeria.
Stakeholders in the disability community have continued to stress the importance of such initiatives, especially at a time when many young persons with disabilities still face barriers related to discrimination, exclusion, lack of access to quality education, and limited participation in civic processes.
By investing in advocacy and leadership development for youth with disabilities, AIDDN is helping to nurture a new generation of confident self-advocates determined to demand their rights, tell their own stories, and contribute meaningfully to national development.
The successful completion of the training programme stands as another important milestone in the organization’s efforts to promote inclusion, equality, and empowerment for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities across Nigeria.
Speaking after the programme, Mrs. Joko Omotola, Director of Projects at AIDDN, reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to creating opportunities that empower persons with disabilities to become active voices within society.
According to her, every person deserves the opportunity to be heard, valued, and empowered regardless of disability, adding that advocacy remains a critical tool for advancing inclusion and protecting the rights of persons with disabilities.
As conversations around disability inclusion continue to grow in Nigeria, initiatives such as the AIDDN Youth Advocacy Skills Training Programme are increasingly becoming vital platforms for transforming lives, building confidence, and creating a more inclusive society where no one is left behind.
