British High Commission says scholars represent investment in Nigeria’s future as beneficiaries prepare for postgraduate studies in the UK
ABUJA, September 9, 2026 — The United Kingdom Government has reaffirmed its commitment to developing Nigeria’s next generation of leaders, professionals and change-makers with the award of 68 prestigious Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships to Nigerians for the 2026 academic year.
The scholars, selected through highly competitive processes, will pursue a wide range of master’s and PhD programmes at universities across the United Kingdom.
Pre-departure ceremonies were held in Abuja and Lagos on Tuesday, September 8, to celebrate the successful scholars and prepare them for their academic journey while encouraging them to return home with knowledge, networks and experiences capable of contributing to Nigeria’s development.
The scholarships bring together young Nigerians with diverse interests and professional backgrounds, united by academic excellence, leadership potential and a demonstrated commitment to making a difference in their communities and country.
UK: Scholarship Is an Investment in Nigeria
Speaking at the pre-departure reception in Abuja, the Chargée d’Affaires of the British High Commission in Abuja, Ms. Vicky Seymour, congratulated the scholars on successfully navigating what she described as a highly competitive application and interview process.
She said the UK viewed the scholarship not simply as an opportunity for individual academic advancement but as an investment in Nigeria’s future.
“Chevening and Commonwealth Scholars have bright futures – and we see your time in the UK as not only as an investment in you as individuals, but also in the future of Nigeria.”
Seymour urged the scholars to make the most of their time in the UK and return to Nigeria equipped to contribute meaningfully to national development.
“On your return to Nigeria, I know you will go on to do great things, just as your alumni have done before you,” she said.
She added that the scholars should bring their experiences back home and use the knowledge and networks gained in the UK to achieve remarkable things for Nigeria.
“It is therefore my hope that you too will bring these experiences back to Nigeria and use them to achieve remarkable things for your country and put your own mark on the future of this great nation,” she said.
12 Nigerians Selected for Chevening Scholarship
Of the 68 Nigerian beneficiaries, 12 have received the highly sought-after Chevening Scholarships, one of the UK Government’s flagship international scholarship programmes.
Chevening Scholars are selected based on their leadership potential, academic excellence and ability to influence positive change in their communities and countries.
One of this year’s beneficiaries, Sarah Nathaniel Yanayork, will study International Human Rights Law at the University of Essex.
For Yanayork, the scholarship represents far more than an academic opportunity. She described her selection as recognition of a three-year journey defined by resilience, personal growth and an unwavering commitment to creating positive change.
“Being selected as a Chevening Scholar is the profound validation of a three-year journey marked by resilience, growth, and an unwavering commitment to change,” she said.
She said the experience would also provide an opportunity to build international networks, participate in volunteerism and gain new perspectives that could be applied to Nigeria’s development.
“Beyond the academics, Chevening is a call to action, a platform to build global networks, immerse myself in volunteerism, and return to Nigeria fully prepared to champion good governance and inclusive development,” Yanayork said.
She described the scholarship as both a personal milestone and a renewed commitment to human rights and community transformation.
“This honour is not just a personal milestone; it is fuel for a lifelong dedication to human rights and community transformation,” she added.
56 Nigerians Receive Commonwealth Scholarships
Meanwhile, 56 Nigerians have so far been awarded Commonwealth Scholarships for the 2026 academic year.
The Commonwealth Scholarship programme provides opportunities for talented citizens of Commonwealth countries to undertake postgraduate study in the UK, with the broader objective of strengthening skills, knowledge and capacity in countries across the Commonwealth.
Among this year’s beneficiaries is Abubakar Umar, who will study Special Educational Needs at the University of Exeter.
For Umar, the opportunity carries an even deeper significance. As a person with a hearing impairment, he said his selection represents not only academic achievement but also a personal journey towards greater inclusion.
“As a person with a hearing impairment, this is very special for me,” Umar said.
He described the Commonwealth Scholarship as a pathway towards learning from inclusive systems and contributing to the development of more inclusive structures.
“Being a Commonwealth Scholar is beyond just a scholarship; it is a journey to an inclusive system — the UK standard,” he said.
Umar also highlighted the inclusive nature of the scholarship process, from application to selection.
“From an inclusive application to an inclusive post-selection process. A journey of resilience and inclusivity has just begun,” he added.
More Than 5,200 Nigerian Alumni
The latest cohort joins a large and distinguished community of Nigerians who have benefited from the Chevening and Commonwealth scholarship programmes over the years.
According to the British High Commission, Nigeria has a combined alumni network of more than 5,237 Chevening and Commonwealth scholars, many of whom have gone on to occupy influential positions and contribute to national development in different sectors.
The alumni network spans government, business, academia, civil society, law, media, human rights, education, technology and other areas critical to Nigeria’s growth.
The UK Government considers the continued development of this network an important part of its long-term relationship with Nigeria.
The scholarships therefore represent more than individual educational opportunities. They are also designed to create networks of professionals who can exchange ideas, build partnerships and apply international knowledge to challenges at home.
A New Generation of Nigerian Leaders
With Nigeria facing complex challenges ranging from governance and human rights to education, economic development, inclusion and social protection, the scholars are expected to return with knowledge and expertise that can contribute to addressing some of these issues.
For many of the beneficiaries, the journey to the UK will not end with the acquisition of a degree.
Instead, it is expected to become a platform for leadership, innovation, professional collaboration and community transformation.

Applications for 2027–2028 Now Open
As the 2026 scholars prepare to embark on their studies, applications for the next cohort are already underway.
The 2027–2028 Chevening Scholarship application process is currently open, offering eligible Nigerians another opportunity to pursue postgraduate study in the UK and join the growing global Chevening alumni community.
Applications for the 2027–2028 Commonwealth Scholarships are also open.
For prospective applicants, the message from this year’s scholars and the British High Commission is one of ambition, resilience and service: academic opportunities become most meaningful when the knowledge gained is ultimately used to create positive change.
