Abia State Government Aims to Alleviate Challenges for Children With Disabilities

In a significant move towards inclusivity, Mr. David Anyaele, the Special Assistant to the Abia State Governor on Persons With Disabilities, has reiterated the state government’s commitment to breaking down barriers hindering the progress of Children With Disabilities (CWDs). The assurance came during a meeting with a delegation from The Straight Child Foundation (TSCF), led by its founder, Dr. Mrs. Peace Amaraegbulam.

Addressing the challenges faced by the disability community, Anyaele emphasized that Governor Alex Otti’s all-inclusive programs and policies are meticulously designed to improve the lives of CWDs. He acknowledged the historical neglect of this community since the 1999 administrations and highlighted the new Abia State’s sensitivity to the plights of People With Disabilities.

Anyaele underscored the government’s commitment to reducing the burden on families raising children with disabilities. Additionally, he assured the implementation of all aspects of the Disability Law, emphasizing the government’s dedication to creating a more inclusive society.

The appointment of HRH. Anthony Ohaeri, a hearing-impaired person, as the traditional ruler of Umuawa Alaocha II Autonomous Community, Ohuhu clan in Umuahia North L.G.A, is cited as a clear indication of the present administration’s commitment to an inclusive government.

Commending Governor Otti and Mrs. Priscilla Otti for their relentless efforts, Anyaele highlighted initiatives such as the para sports inauguration, sponsorship for Paralympics, and the distribution of white canes during the 2023 International White Cane Safety Day Celebration. These efforts reflect the administration’s dedication to ensuring PWDs enjoy their rights without discrimination.

Furthermore, Anyaele praised TSCF for its vital role in society, providing early intervention services for children with Clubfoot, raising awareness about the rights of Cerebral Palsy (CP) children and PWDs, and conducting reorientation outreaches. He encouraged Dr. Amaraegbulam, the founder of TSCF, to stay strong and courageous, assuring the foundation of a collaborative and supportive relationship with the government.

During the Advocacy visit, Dr. Peace Amaraegbulam, the founder of TSCF and a consultant orthopedic surgeon at the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia, revealed the foundation’s plans. These include the establishment of a rehabilitation center for CP children with a dedicated pediatric gym for physiotherapy services and a vocational center to expose CP children to modern technologies.

Expressing gratitude for Mr. David Anyaele’s efforts leading to the passage of the Disability Act, Dr. Amaraegbulam encouraged him to continue leveraging his position to achieve more for PWDs. The essence of the visit was to foster collaboration with the government to further advance the cause of Persons With Disabilities in Abia State.
