Courageous Effurun Resident Wrestles Armed Robber, Gun Breaks as Delta Police Launch Manhunt

By TQM News,

A courageous resident of Effurun, Delta State, has narrowly escaped what could have been a deadly armed robbery attack after confronting and wrestling with one of two masked men who broke into his residence in the early hours of Thursday.

The dramatic encounter resulted in the locally made shotgun carried by one of the suspects breaking apart, forcing the two alleged robbers to flee and abandon the firearm at the scene.

The incident, according to the Delta State Police Command, occurred at about 5:30 a.m. on September 4, 2026, in the Charlisco area along the NPA Express Road, Effurun.

The police said the victim, a 48-year-old man, was inside his residence when two masked men allegedly broke into the building, with one of them armed with a locally made shotgun.

Rather than surrendering to the attackers, the victim reportedly confronted the armed suspect and engaged him in a struggle.

During the confrontation, the firearm broke, leaving the suspects with little option but to flee.

However, before escaping, the second suspect allegedly struck the victim on the forehead, causing him injury.

The two suspects subsequently fled the scene, abandoning the broken firearm.

Police Recover Abandoned Firearm

The incident was reported at the Ekpan Police Division at approximately 6:14 a.m.

Following the report, the Divisional Police Officer immediately deployed police operatives to the area.

On arrival, the officers recovered the broken locally made firearm allegedly abandoned by the fleeing suspects.

The injured victim was subsequently referred to a hospital for medical attention.

The Delta State Police Command said a manhunt has been launched for the suspects and assured that efforts are ongoing to identify, track and apprehend them.

Suspected Drug Peddler Arrested in Agbor

In a separate operation in Agbor, police operatives also arrested a 40-year-old woman, Joy Anthony, over alleged involvement in the distribution of illicit drugs.

The arrest was carried out at about 5:00 a.m. on September 6, 2026, by operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping Unit (SAKU), Ubulu-Uku.

According to the police, the operation followed what it described as credible intelligence concerning suspected drug-related activities in the area.

The operatives conducted a search of the suspect’s residence in Agbor-Obi after executing a search warrant.

During the operation, quantities of substances identified by the police as Swinol, Tramadol, Codeine, Canadian Loud and weeds suspected to be Indian hemp were allegedly recovered.

The suspect and the recovered exhibits have been taken into police custody as investigations continue.

Police Commend Victim’s Courage

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Samuel E. Erale, commended the 48-year-old victim for his courage in confronting the suspected armed robbers.

The Commissioner also assured the victim that the police would intensify efforts to track down the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.

The Command urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities.

Members of the public who have useful information that could assist the police in identifying or apprehending the suspects are encouraged to contact the nearest police station or the Delta State Police Command Control Room.

The Command provided the following telephone numbers for members of the public:

08036684974 | 08114895600 | 08025666914

The Delta State Police Command said its operations are part of ongoing efforts to combat armed robbery, drug-related offences and other forms of criminality across the state.

The statement was signed by SP Bright Edafe, ANIPR, FCIA, FIPMD, Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, Asaba, and dated September 8, 2026.

The Bigger Message

The Effurun incident also highlights the unpredictable and potentially dangerous nature of residential robbery attacks, where victims can find themselves confronted by armed criminals within the supposed safety of their homes.

While the victim’s intervention resulted in the firearm being abandoned, residents are advised to exercise extreme caution during criminal attacks and, where possible, prioritize personal safety while contacting law enforcement.

The police investigation into both incidents remains ongoing.
