Abuja, October 1, 2025 – As Nigeria marks her 65th Independence Anniversary, the Rebuilding Hope on Wheels Initiative (RHOWI) has joined millions of citizens at home and abroad in celebrating the country’s journey of resilience, diversity, and unity.
In a powerful Independence message, RHOWI described Nigeria as a nation richly blessed with human and natural resources, vibrant cultures, and an unyielding spirit. The organization, however, stressed that true independence and progress can only be achieved when no citizen is left behind — particularly persons with disabilities (PWDs).
“Independence anniversaries are not only moments of celebration but also of sober reflection,” RHOWI stated. “We must recommit ourselves to the ideals of freedom, justice, and equity that our founding fathers envisioned when they laid the foundation of this country 65 years ago. Progress must not be for a select few but for every Nigerian.”
The Untapped Strength of PWDs
As a leading advocate for the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities — especially survivors of spinal cord injuries — RHOWI highlighted the persistent barriers faced by millions of Nigerians living with disabilities. These include inaccessibility, discrimination, and inadequate support systems.
Yet, the organization emphasized that within this community lies immense potential: creativity, strength, and dreams that, if nurtured, can contribute significantly to national development.
“To every survivor of spinal cord injury and every Nigerian living with disability, we say: you are not forgotten, you are not alone, and your story is part of Nigeria’s strength,” the message reassured.
Call to Action for a More Inclusive Nigeria
RHOWI used the Independence anniversary to call on the federal, state, and local governments, as well as the private sector and civil society, to:
- Establish functional rehabilitation centers across the country.
- Fully implement the Disability Act and other inclusion-related policies.
- Strengthen social support systems to make them responsive to the needs of PWDs.
- Promote accessibility in public infrastructure, healthcare, education, and employment.
The group insisted that a Nigeria where inclusivity thrives is not only possible but necessary for true nation-building.
Hope Beyond Challenges
Reflecting on the nation’s 65-year journey, RHOWI acknowledged that Nigeria has faced numerous challenges — from political instability to economic hardship. But through it all, the resilience and courage of Nigerians have kept the vision of a stronger and united country alive.
“Despite the many challenges we have faced as a people, the story of Nigeria remains one of hope, courage, and the determination to build a better tomorrow,” said Sa’a Abubakar, RHOWI’s Communications Officer. “As we celebrate 65 years of nationhood, may we all rise together with renewed hope, shared responsibility, and an unshakable faith in Nigeria’s greatness. The future is bright, and together, we can make it accessible to all.”
