Kano State Governor Establishes Department for Persons with Disabilities, Earns Widespread Praise

In a groundbreaking move toward inclusivity and social justice, the Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba K. Yusuf, has received widespread commendation from the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) community for his decision to establish a dedicated Department of Persons with Disabilities under the Ministry of Women, Children, and PWDs. This landmark initiative is seen as a significant leap toward safeguarding the rights and enhancing the well-being of PWDs in the state.

The announcement has been met with enthusiasm from disability rights advocates, who view it as a long-overdue step in integrating PWDs into mainstream governance and development policies. Among those who publicly lauded the initiative is Engr. Abdul Haruna, a prominent advocate for disability rights. In a letter of appreciation, he praised Governor Yusuf’s visionary leadership and described the establishment of the department as a transformative milestone that reinforces the government’s commitment to inclusivity and social equity.

“This remarkable achievement is a testament to His Excellency’s unwavering dedication to ensuring that no individual is marginalized in the development and progress of our beloved state,” Haruna stated.

The newly created Department of PWDs is expected to serve as a structured platform for empowerment, policy implementation, and advocacy. It aims to provide a comprehensive framework for addressing the unique challenges faced by PWDs, including access to education, healthcare, employment opportunities, and social services.

In line with this initiative, the Kano State Government has appointed Dr. Binta Bala, PhD, as the pioneer Director of the department. Dr. Bala, a seasoned advocate for disability rights, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role. Her appointment has been widely applauded, with many stakeholders expressing confidence in her ability to drive the department toward meaningful impact.

Dr. Bala, in her acceptance remarks, expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to serve in this capacity. She emphasized that the establishment of the department is a vital step in uniting persons with disabilities under a common cause, fostering stronger advocacy, and ensuring their voices are heard in policymaking.

“I am truly honored by this appointment, and I am committed to making a positive impact on society,” she affirmed.

According to a communiqué released following the announcement, the creation of the Department of PWDs signals a new era for disability inclusion in Kano State. It is anticipated that the department, under Dr. Bala’s leadership, will foster a more supportive environment for PWDs, ensuring that their rights, needs, and aspirations are given the attention they deserve.

The PWDs community remains optimistic and looks forward to witnessing the tangible benefits of this initiative. Many believe that this department will set a precedent for other states to follow, reinforcing the national call for disability-inclusive governance and sustainable development. Governor Yusuf’s bold step is not just a victory for PWDs in Kano but a significant milestone in Nigeria’s broader disability rights movement.
