The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ireti Kingibe, has voiced her concerns over what she described as the “uneven allocation of resources” in Nigeria. During a recent distribution of over 10,000 medical equipment to healthcare centers and residents in her constituency, Senator Kingibe drew attention to the disparities in representation and funding that continue to hamper development in the FCT.
Addressing attendees at the event held in Jahi, Abuja, through her Senior Legislative Aide (SLA), Dr. Christien Omofoma, Senator Kingibe pointed out the glaring inequality between the FCT and other states in Nigeria. Unlike the 36 states, each represented by three senators, the FCT—despite being larger than many states—is represented by just one senator.
“This disparity limits the resources allocated to the FCT, affecting the development of the territory,” Omofoma said on behalf of the Senator. He added that while Senator Kingibe has been working tirelessly with the limited resources at her disposal, the current arrangement prevents the FCT from receiving funding equivalent to what states with three senators enjoy.
A Call for Fair Resource Allocation
Omofoma emphasized the need for greater attention and resources for the FCT, stating, “FCT deserves more attention and resources. Imagine the level of impact Senator Kingibe could achieve if the FCT received allocations similar to those of states with three senators.”
The SLA also highlighted a lack of collaboration between the FCT Senator and the FCT Minister as a major hindrance to the inclusion of critical projects in the territory’s budget. According to him, this disconnect has led to the exclusion of vital initiatives, impacting the progress and development of the FCT.
“Important projects have been left out of the budget due to the absence of synergy between the Senator and the Minister,” Omofoma explained, though he expressed optimism that the differences would soon be resolved.
A Monumental Outreach
The event in Jahi saw representatives from all six area councils, healthcare facilities, traditional leaders, Labour Party executives, and civil society groups in attendance. Senator Kingibe distributed a variety of medical equipment, including wheelchairs, walkers, walking aids, consumables, and other critical tools.
Head of Constituency Office, Ambassador Emmanuel Destiny, described the distribution as a monumental success. “It exceeded my expectations. General Hospitals, National Hospitals, Federal Medical Centres, and Teaching Hospitals were all present, and they left with their buses filled with essential medical supplies,” he shared.
Destiny commended Senator Kingibe for her unwavering commitment to improving lives in the FCT, noting that she dedicates over 90% of her salary and other personal resources to initiatives in agriculture, education, water, health, and labor.
“Her empowerment programs have touched countless lives,” Destiny added, praising her ability to prioritize the needs of her constituents despite the resource constraints.
Calls for Inclusive Distribution
A notable voice at the event was Madam Rose, Vice-President of the Network of Women with Disabilities, who highlighted the need for targeted support to ensure that distributed resources reach those most in need.
“Collaboration with organizations of persons with disabilities would improve the management and distribution of medical equipment,” Madam Rose suggested. She also called for prioritizing women with disabilities, noting their increased vulnerability and the vital role such support could play in their lives.
While expressing gratitude for Senator Kingibe’s initiative, she emphasized, “This is a commendable step, but we must ensure that these resources reach those who need them most, especially women with disabilities.”
A Senator Making a Difference
Despite the challenges of representation and funding, Senator Kingibe’s impact in the FCT remains significant. From her healthcare interventions to her broader empowerment programs, she continues to champion initiatives that alleviate suffering and foster development.
As the event drew to a close, many attendees praised her efforts and echoed the need for equitable resource allocation for the FCT. With growing calls for collaboration and inclusivity, it is clear that Senator Ireti Kingibe is not only addressing current needs but also laying the groundwork for a more equitable future for the residents of the FCT.
