Isau Ogunkunle Wins Bronze for Nigeria in Para-Table Tennis at Paris 2024 Paralympics

Team Nigeria has secured another medal at the ongoing Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, thanks to the impressive performance of Isau Ogunkunle, who clinched a bronze in the men’s para-table tennis event. Ogunkunle’s medal adds to Nigeria’s growing tally, marking a historic moment as the first singles Paralympic medal in table tennis for the country since the Sydney 2000 Paralympics.

Ogunkunle, who displayed remarkable skill and resilience, advanced to the semi-finals where he faced a tough challenge against world number two, Young-Gun Kim of South Korea. Despite an early surge that saw him win the first set 11-9, Ogunkunle could not maintain the momentum, ultimately falling 3-1 in a tightly contested match. The subsequent sets ended 5-11, 4-11, and a dramatic 11-13, with Ogunkunle narrowly missing the chance to force a decisive fifth set in the final moments.

In para-table tennis, both losing semi-finalists automatically receive bronze medals, eliminating the need for an additional playoff match. Ogunkunle’s achievement not only secures Nigeria’s fifth medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics but also makes history by breaking the 24-year drought in singles table tennis medals for the nation.

Team Nigeria’s medal tally now stands at an impressive five: one gold, two silver, and two bronze. Ogunkunle’s victory has brought pride to the country, reinforcing Nigeria’s continued excellence in para sports on the global stage.

As the Paralympic Games progress, the excitement and anticipation grow for more victories from Nigeria’s para-athletes, whose determination and hard work continue to shine.
