Ondo State Seeks Comprehensive Overhaul of Disability Laws in Landmark Stakeholder Engagement

Akure, Nigeria — July 23, 2024

In a groundbreaking effort to reform and update disability legislation, the Disability Not A Barrier Initiative (DINABI) in partnership with the Ondo State Agency for the Welfare of Persons with Disabilities and with support from the Ondo State Law Commission, convened a technical session on Tuesday, July 23rd, 2024. This significant event aimed to identify and address gaps in the existing disability laws of the state, which have not been reviewed in 13 years.

The session brought together key stakeholders, including government officials, legal experts, representatives of persons with disabilities (PWDs), and advocacy groups. The primary goal was to formulate and incorporate suitable laws into the current Ondo State Disability Law, ensuring that the legislation is more inclusive and reflective of the needs and rights of PWDs.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Olajide Funso, Executive Director of DINABI, emphasized the necessity of this legislative review. He noted that the initiative seeks to empower PWDs by giving them a voice in the legislative process. “For far too long, the voices of Persons with Disabilities have been sidelined in critical discussions that affect their lives. This exercise is about ensuring that they have a say in the laws that govern their rights and welfare,” Mr. Funso stated. He extended his gratitude to the Disability Rights Fund (DRF) for their financial support, which was instrumental in making the program possible.

The technical session was not just a platform for discussion but also a testament to the commitment of the Ondo State government to the welfare of PWDs. Chief Mrs. Olamide Falana, Special Adviser to the Governor on Gender Matters, lauded the initiative, highlighting it as timely and necessary. She reaffirmed Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s dedication to protecting the rights of PWDs. “The Governor remains steadfast in his commitment to ensuring that PWDs are not left behind. This review is a crucial step towards achieving a more inclusive society,” Mrs. Falana remarked.

Chief Mrs. Falana also detailed the various efforts by the government to support PWDs in Ondo State, underscoring the administration’s resolve to provide equitable opportunities for all citizens. She assured the stakeholders that the government would act on the recommendations arising from the session, thereby ensuring that PWDs receive the support and recognition they deserve.

Adding her voice to the discourse, Mrs. Bosede Osamaye, State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, commended the initiative’s organizers for their proactive approach. She noted that the review of the Disability Law is especially pertinent given the current favorable political climate. “We are fortunate to have leadership that understands and supports the cause of PWDs. The review of this law is not just timely; it is essential for the continued progress of our state in terms of inclusivity and equal rights,” Mrs. Osamaye said.

In a display of political will, Hon. Barr. Felix Afe assured attendees that the Ondo State House of Assembly would act promptly once the revised legislation is presented. He highlighted the progressive actions taken by other state assemblies and expressed confidence that Ondo State would follow suit. “We are committed to ensuring that the legislative framework in Ondo State is updated to meet the current needs and realities of PWDs. The House of Assembly will give this matter the attention it deserves,” Hon. Afe pledged.

The event also featured a heartfelt welcome address by Hon. Mrs. Folashade Arise, Chairman of the Ondo State Agency for the Welfare of Persons with Disabilities. She expressed her gratitude to DINABI for their collaboration and emphasized the importance of collective engagement in the law review process. “This meeting is an opportunity for all relevant stakeholders to come together, share insights, and work towards making our disability laws more inclusive and comprehensive. It is a call to action for all of us to play our part in shaping a better future for PWDs in Ondo State,” Hon. Arise declared.

The technical session marked a pivotal moment in Ondo State’s journey towards greater inclusivity and protection of the rights of PWDs. As the discussions continue and the reviewed document nears completion, there is a renewed sense of hope and optimism among stakeholders. The commitment shown by the state government, advocacy groups, and PWDs themselves signals a promising future where disability is not a barrier to full participation in society.

This collaborative effort underscores the importance of inclusive governance and the need for continuous dialogue and action to ensure that all citizens, regardless of their abilities, are given equal opportunities and protections under the law. The people of Ondo State, and particularly the PWD community, eagerly await the positive changes that this legislative review promises to bring.
