As an aid to persons with disabilities in the State, the Rule Of Law And Anti-Corruption, ROLAC and Anambra State Government through her Ministry of Social Welfare, Children And Women Affairs have unveiled a “Directory Of Sign Language Interpreters” geared towards enhancing the communication abilities of Deaf persons.
The unveiling of the document took place in Awka, today, Wednesday, 14th April, 2021.
Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption, RoLAC, is an European Union sponsored programme targeted at creating and strengthening efficient systems and institutions thereby eliminating possibilities of corruption.
The Directory of Sign Language Interpreters in Anambra State, therefore is one those engagements by ROLAC to create a better society.
It is a file system created by ROLAC containing lists of trained individuals in sign language in the state to improve the communication gaps that exists among persons with disabilities and between them and people who do not have such impairments.
It is expected to also aid the elimination of all forms of violence against persons with disabilities, provide maximum protection and effective remedies for victims and punishment for offenders which can only be achieved through effective communication.
In an opening remark, ROLAC State Programme Coordinator, Mrs Josephine Onah, thanked the Anambra State Government for their support and encouraged persons with disabilities to speak up and always seek help when needed.
In attendance at the unveiling ceremony are the Special Adviser to Governor Willie Obiano on Disability Matters, Anambra State, Mr Chuks Ezewuzie, Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue, represented by Special Assistant to the Governor on Social Welfare, Women and Children Affairs, Mr Ernest Ebenebe, Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu, represented by Deputy Chief Registrar, Mrs Vivian Udedike, among others.
