NCPWD Empowers Katsina PWDs with Assistive Devices, Reinforces Commitment to Inclusion

In a bold demonstration of its commitment to advancing disability inclusion in Nigeria, the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has donated a range of assistive devices to persons with disabilities in Katsina State, offering renewed hope and practical support to many who face daily mobility and livelihood challenges.

The donation, facilitated through the Katsina State Government, underscores the Commission’s ongoing efforts to break down barriers and promote equal opportunities for persons with disabilities across the country.

Representing the Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, at the event, the Head of the Assistive Devices and Technology Unit, Dr. Ismail Idris, reaffirmed the Commission’s unwavering dedication to improving the quality of life of persons with disabilities.

Speaking during the presentation, Dr. Idris emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure that no person with a disability is left behind in Nigeria’s development agenda.

“It is our earnest desire that these assistive devices will go a long way in eliminating barriers and improving the lives of persons with disabilities in Katsina State,” he stated. “As a Commission, we are committed to sustaining an institution that promotes inclusion through strong advocacy and the protection of the rights of all persons with disabilities in society.”

The assistive devices donated included elbow crutches, walking sticks, axillary (underarm) crutches, and sewing machines—tools that not only enhance mobility but also promote economic empowerment and independence.

Receiving the items on behalf of the Katsina State Government, the Executive Governor, Mallam Dikko Umaru Radda, represented by his Special Adviser on Disability Matters, Hon. Umar Jibril Bindawo, expressed deep appreciation to the Commission for its continued support to persons with disabilities nationwide.

He commended the leadership of NCPWD for its proactive and impactful interventions, noting that such efforts are critical in bridging the gap of inequality faced by persons with disabilities.

“We thank the Executive Secretary and his team for the wonderful work they are doing for persons with disabilities across Nigeria,” he said. “We assure you of our full support and collaboration in any way necessary. These devices will be distributed transparently to those who need them most. We are truly grateful for this kind gesture.”

The event, which drew stakeholders in the disability community and government officials, marked yet another milestone in the push for inclusive governance and social protection for persons with disabilities in Nigeria.

For many beneficiaries, the donation represents more than just equipment—it is a lifeline, a symbol of recognition, and a step toward dignity, independence, and active participation in society.

As Nigeria continues to strive toward inclusive development, initiatives like this by the NCPWD highlight the critical role of strategic partnerships between federal institutions and state governments in transforming lives and reshaping narratives around disability.

With sustained commitment and collective action, stakeholders believe that the vision of an inclusive society—where persons with disabilities can thrive without barriers—is not only possible but within reach.
