FG empowers some women with disabilities

The highlight of the closing ceremony was the provision of a brand-new laptop, certificate, and stipend as transportation benefits to the ninety participants as well as the group photograph with Director-General and her management team.

The Federal Government has trained 90 female technicians including female persons with disabilities, PWDs in various courses on Information and Communication Technology and Mechatronic to improve their proficiency in ICT for economic empowerment.

The Director General, National Center for Women Development, Dr Asabe Vilita-Basir, made this known in Abuja at the closing ceremony of a 5-Day Information Communication Technology (ICT) training with the theme: ICT for inclusive education”

She explained that the training was aimed at exposing the participants to various ICT applications, tools and techniques and allowed them to enhance their social, cultural, political and economic integration and to become self-reliant and productive.

 “We will continue to encourage the youth and women, who form more that 70 per cent of the nation’s population, to harness the power of ICT, so, they can substantively participate in and benefit from information revolution sweeping across the country,” she said.

The Director of ICT of the center, Mr Morrison Udobong, said the training exposed participants to ICT Applications, its Usage and the Mechatronics Concept to expose more girls and women to jobs driven by technology and innovation

“The trainings exposed female PWDs to Assistive technologies and Entrepreneurship and the introduction of Artificial Intelligence, Computer Electronic Control Module, Car Engine Diagnostic Techniques and many others. Therefore, developing the requisite capacities of girls/women will bridge the digital gap and provide an avenue for the country to fully utilize the potentials of girls, women and youths.” he said

On behalf of the beneficiaries, the women leader, FCT joint association of persons with disability, JONAPWD, Ms. Beatrice Mube, expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for passing the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018 and encouraged the beneficiaries make judicious use of the skills towards empowerment and financially independent.

“Though we are the most marginalized in the society, but this ICT training by the center has empowered us with over 25 different business opportunities” she said

The event featured the distribution of Laptops and financial grants to the 90 participants consisting of 45 Female Technicians and 45 female PWDs trained on various ICT & Mechatronics courses.
