Daniel Onwe Receives 2024 Global Accessibility Leadership Award

Washington DC, USA – In a landmark recognition of his advocacy efforts, Daniel Onwe, lead partner of the law firm Daniel & Sophina, has been honored with the prestigious 2024 Global Accessibility Leadership Award. The award was presented by the International Association of Accessibility Practitioners (IAAP) during the closing ceremony of the M-EnABLE Summit on October 17, 2024.

The IAAP, a division of the Global Initiative for Inclusive ICTs (G3ict), focuses on advancing professional development and certification for accessibility experts worldwide. This recognition celebrates Onwe’s transformative contributions toward building accessible environments and public spaces across Nigeria, setting new standards for inclusion and accessibility.

A Trailblazer for Disability Rights in Nigeria

Daniel Onwe’s efforts have left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s legal framework for disability rights. A key architect of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, Onwe’s advocacy ensured that the law mandates accessibility in all public structures. His work has not only influenced national policy but has also inspired state-level disability legislation across Nigeria.

Onwe’s commitment to accessibility goes beyond legislation. As co-founder and first President of the Association of Lawyers with Disabilities in Nigeria (ALDIN), he led ground-breaking efforts to level the playing field for persons with disabilities in the legal profession and justice systems. During his tenure, Onwe became a formidable voice for equality, challenging discriminatory practices and securing better access for PWDs within Nigeria’s legal landscape.

Leadership and Legacy

In 2023, Onwe made headlines again when he successfully conducted a peaceful transition of leadership at ALDIN, handing over the presidency after a fruitful tenure. That same year, he was awarded the Chevening Scholarship—a prestigious academic award funded by the British Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO)—in recognition of his commitment to social justice and disability inclusion.

Global Recognition of Impact

Receiving the Global Accessibility Leadership Award underscores Onwe’s impact on disability inclusion not just in Nigeria but on the global stage. The award recognizes his tireless efforts to advocate for accessible public buildings, inclusive policies, and the empowerment of persons with disabilities.

Speaking at the award ceremony, IAAP officials praised Onwe’s work as a model of transformative leadership, emphasizing the importance of strong advocacy, effective legislation, and collaborative efforts in creating accessible societies.

A Vision for the Future

Reflecting on Onwe’s achievements, the award highlights the significance of inclusive environments that allow persons with disabilities to thrive without barriers. His journey continues to inspire new generations of advocates, as his vision for an accessible world remains a driving force for systemic change in Nigeria and beyond.

This recognition at the M-EnABLE Summit reaffirms that Daniel Onwe’s legacy is one of empowerment, inclusion, and justice—a beacon of hope for accessibility advocates around the world.
