Assistive Technology Workshop Empowers Persons With Disabilities and Young Girls Towards Independence and Leadership

Bureau of Information Technology Hosts Sensitization Event in Commemoration of International Girls Day In ICT

In a concerted effort to foster inclusivity and empower marginalized groups, a sensitization workshop on the theme “Empowering Independence, Harnessing Leadership And Assistive Technologies For Inclusive Success” was organized by the Bureau of Information Technology (BIT), in collaboration with the Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and the Non-Governmental Organization, Dove Nexus. The event, held at Ogun TechHub in Kobape, Abeokuta, marked the commemoration of the 2024 International Girls Day In ICT and aimed to highlight the transformative potential of assistive technology in supporting Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) and young girls towards independence and leadership.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Dayo Abiodun, Special Adviser on Information and Communication Technology (ICT), emphasized the pivotal role of technological advancements in facilitating independence and inclusivity for individuals with special needs and young girls. Represented by Mrs. Olatundun Adekunte, Director of Standard Regulations, Planning and Research, Mr. Abiodun underscored the importance of leveraging assistive technologies to break down barriers and combat stereotypes hindering the full inclusion of PWDs and young girls in society.

The workshop aimed to expose participants to a range of tech-assistive tools designed to enhance independence and facilitate daily activities. Among the technologies showcased were the Brain Computer Interface (BCI), which enables individuals to translate their thoughts into actions, and innovative wheelchair designs equipped with power add-ons. Additionally, smart glasses were introduced as a means of providing assistance and enhancing confidence among PWDs and young girls, thereby positioning them for leadership roles in society.

In his keynote address titled “Impact of Assistive Technologies on Daily Lives and Independence,” Prof. Ayo Osisanya, an Audiologist, emphasized the transformative potential of assistive technologies in enabling individuals to live fulfilling and functional lives. He highlighted the role of technology as a universal catalyst for solving challenges and stressed the importance of promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education, particularly among young girls, to empower them to realize their dreams and aspirations.

Reflecting on the significance of the workshop, Miss Debra Ojoade, a participant, shared her personal experience of utilizing assistive technology to overcome communication barriers. She recounted how the use of headphones enabled her to hear and eventually speak for the first time, underscoring the importance of government support in providing affordable access to assistive tools for individuals with disabilities.

The event concluded with a call to action for increased investment in assistive technologies and continued advocacy for the empowerment of marginalized groups, reaffirming the commitment to promoting independence, leadership, and inclusivity for all members of society.
