Mr. David Anyaele, the Special Assistant to Governor Alex Otti on Disability Matters, passionately conveyed the governor’s commitment during a visit by the management of the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) in Umuahia. He underscored Governor Otti’s determination to establish an effective framework to mitigate the impact of climate change.

One significant stride in this commitment is the approval of the Department of Climate Change within the Ministry of Environment. This department is currently conducting a comprehensive “Vulnerability Assessment Impact on Climate Change” in all 17 local government areas of the state. Anyaele expressed optimism that this assessment would contribute to developing a robust climate change profile for Abia.

“I want to assure that the PWDs will not be left behind in this climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts of the government,” stated Anyaele. He highlighted the governor’s dedication to ensuring an inclusive approach by collaborating with organizations like CCD and their international partners, the Disability Rights Fund (DRF). This collaboration aims to promote awareness of climate change issues in a disability-friendly manner.

The Interim Head of CCD, Mrs. Florence Austin, shed light on the purpose of their visit – to seek the government’s collaboration on the project “Promoting Disability-Inclusive Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation in Abia State.” Supported by the Disability Rights Fund, this initiative aims to advance disability-inclusive climate change strategies and produce evidence-based reports on PWDs’ inclusion in the state’s response.

Austin emphasized the belief that an inclusive approach not only benefits individuals with disabilities but also contributes to more effective and resilient climate change strategies for the entire community.

Commending CCD for their initiative, heads of clusters in the disability community expressed unwavering support for the project’s success. They also extended gratitude to Governor Otti for the appointment of Mr. Anyaele, describing him as a blessing to the disability community.

This groundbreaking commitment by the Abia State Government signifies a paradigm shift towards a more inclusive and sustainable future, making strides in both climate action and social responsibility.
