LAGOS — In a significant push to bridge the digital divide and expand opportunities for persons with disabilities, the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has trained 100 persons with disabilities (PWDs) in digital citizenship skills.
The two-day training, held from September 9 to 10, 2026, at The Cordis Hotel, Ashabi Cole Street, off Agidingbi Road, Alausa, Ikeja, focused on equipping participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to navigate the digital world safely, responsibly and effectively.
Driving Digital Inclusion
Representing the General Manager of LASODA, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, at the opening ceremony, the Head of the Department of Monitoring, Evaluation and Orientation, Dr. Funmi Adekola, commended the NCC for deliberately including persons with disabilities in its digital empowerment agenda.
According to her, the initiative represents an important step towards advancing digital inclusion and ensuring that persons with disabilities are not left behind in an increasingly technology-driven society.
“We particularly commend the Nigerian Communications Commission for engaging stakeholders and ensuring that Persons with Disabilities are deliberately included in its digital empowerment agenda,” Adekola said.
She also acknowledged Fornido Development Limited for coordinating and delivering the training, expressing hope that the knowledge acquired would translate into tangible opportunities for the participants.
From Digital Skills to Economic Opportunities
The training brought together 100 persons with disabilities to develop practical digital citizenship competencies while promoting responsible participation in the digital space.
Beyond basic digital knowledge, the programme was designed to strengthen participants’ prospects in employment, entrepreneurship and socio-economic participation, giving them tools to take advantage of opportunities emerging from the digital economy.
Participants were exposed to key aspects of digital citizenship, with emphasis on navigating online platforms safely, responsibly and effectively.
For persons with disabilities who continue to face barriers in accessing employment and economic opportunities, digital skills can provide new pathways for participation, entrepreneurship and independence.
Certificates Presented to Participants
At the conclusion of the two-day programme, participants received certificates in recognition of their successful completion of the training.
The initiative underscores the importance of ensuring that digital transformation is inclusive and that persons with disabilities are not merely consumers of technology but active participants in the digital economy.
As Nigeria continues its digital transformation journey, initiatives that deliberately build the capacity of persons with disabilities could play a critical role in creating a more inclusive society where access to technology translates into access to opportunity.
