Nigeria Marks Historic Milestone as Federal Ministry of Health Establishes Brain Health Desk on World Brain Day

Landmark Initiative Signals New Era for Neurological Care, Policy Development, and Brain Health Advocacy Across the Country

ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria has recorded a major milestone in its healthcare journey as the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare officially commemorated World Brain Day for the first time, while also announcing the establishment of a Brain Health Desk, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at strengthening neurological healthcare, policy coordination, advocacy, and public awareness across the country.

The historic development has been widely welcomed by stakeholders in the health sector, particularly the Brain & Spine Foundation Africa (BSFA), which has spent nearly a decade advocating for improved brain health services, greater public awareness, and better support for people living with neurological disorders.

The announcement was made during the official World Brain Day commemoration, marking what many experts describe as a turning point in Nigeria’s efforts to address the growing burden of neurological diseases and promote equitable access to brain healthcare.

According to the Founder and Executive Director of Brain & Spine Foundation Africa, Engr. Chika Okwuolisa, the official recognition of World Brain Day by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare represents a historic breakthrough in the country’s healthcare landscape.

He described the establishment of the Brain Health Desk as a visionary decision that will provide a dedicated platform for coordinating national efforts on brain health, strengthening partnerships, driving policy reforms, supporting research, and expanding access to quality neurological care for millions of Nigerians.

“This day will forever be remembered as a landmark in the history of neurological health in Nigeria. For the first time, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has officially commemorated World Brain Day, sending a clear message that brain health is now a national priority,” Okwuolisa stated.

He explained that the newly created Brain Health Desk is expected to serve as a strategic hub for coordinating brain health initiatives, facilitating collaboration among stakeholders, promoting evidence-based policies, and ensuring that neurological health receives sustained government attention.

The initiative was officially endorsed by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Mrs. Kachollom S. Daju, mni, whose leadership was widely praised for making the historic achievement possible.

Okwuolisa commended the Permanent Secretary for her commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system through innovative policies and inclusive leadership.

He also acknowledged the significant contributions of the Director of Public Health, Dr. Charles Nzelu, for advancing public health priorities and supporting the national conversation on brain health.

Special recognition was equally given to the National Programme Coordinator for Mental Health, Dr. Ojo, whose dedication, collaboration, and technical support were described as instrumental in the successful planning and execution of the country’s first official World Brain Day celebration.

Beyond government officials, the Brain & Spine Foundation Africa expressed appreciation to the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Federation of Neurology (WFN), the Nigerian Academy of Neurological Surgeons (NANS), the Nigerian Society of Neurological Sciences (NSNS), development partners, volunteers, healthcare professionals, and advocates whose collective efforts have continued to advance neurological healthcare in Nigeria.

For almost ten years, Brain & Spine Foundation Africa has remained at the forefront of campaigns promoting brain health awareness, supporting patients living with neurological conditions, and advocating for improved healthcare policies and services.

The organisation noted that witnessing the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare officially commemorate World Brain Day and establish a dedicated Brain Health Desk represents the fulfilment of a long-standing vision to place neurological health firmly on Nigeria’s national health agenda.

Health experts believe the initiative comes at a critical time when neurological disorders, including stroke, epilepsy, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, traumatic brain injuries, and other brain-related conditions, continue to pose significant public health challenges across the country.

Stakeholders say the establishment of the Brain Health Desk has the potential to improve coordination among government agencies, healthcare institutions, professional associations, researchers, and civil society organisations working to reduce the burden of neurological diseases.

The initiative is also expected to strengthen advocacy, promote early diagnosis and treatment, improve public education, and expand access to quality neurological services, particularly for underserved populations.

As Nigeria joins the global community in commemorating World Brain Day under the theme “Brain Health: Access for All,” stakeholders have called for sustained investment in neurological care, stronger health systems, increased funding for research, and inclusive policies that ensure every Nigerian has access to quality brain healthcare regardless of location or socioeconomic status.

The historic commemoration and the establishment of the Brain Health Desk mark the beginning of what many describe as a new chapter in Nigeria’s healthcare system—one that places brain health among the nation’s public health priorities and reinforces the country’s commitment to improving the lives of people living with neurological disorders.

For Brain & Spine Foundation Africa, the achievement is not the end of the journey but the beginning of renewed efforts to advocate for stronger policies, improved healthcare services, greater public awareness, and equitable access to neurological care for every Nigerian.
