Abuja, Nigeria — The Albinism Association of Nigeria (AAN) has entered a new chapter in its quest for equality, inclusion, and empowerment following the successful inauguration of a newly elected National Executive Council (NEC) tasked with steering the affairs of the association over the coming years.
The historic election, conducted during the association’s National Convention held at Parkview Hotels, Wuse Zone 1, Abuja, was widely hailed as peaceful, transparent, and credible. Delegates from across the country participated in the democratic exercise, which underscored the association’s commitment to accountability, unity, and good governance.
At the end of the keenly contested process, Josephine Omolola emerged as the new National President of the Albinism Association of Nigeria, earning the confidence of members to lead the organization at a critical time when advocacy for the rights of persons with albinism remains a pressing national concern.

Joining Omolola on the newly constituted National Executive Council are Eyop Cyril Eyop, Vice President (North); Ogbuagu Nonyelum, Vice President (South); Rex Erameh, General Secretary; Abimbola Oluwatosin Oluwasegun, Assistant Secretary; Isola Omotola Elizabeth, Treasurer; Ibrahim Momoh, Financial Secretary; Samaila Salisu, Public Relations Officer; and Ademeko Busayo, Welfare Officer.
A Vision for Inclusion and Equal Opportunities
In her acceptance speech, an emotional but determined Omolola expressed profound appreciation to members for entrusting her with the responsibility of leading the association.
She described her election as not only a personal milestone but also a collective victory for every person with albinism in Nigeria who continues to strive for dignity, recognition, and equal opportunities.
“I am deeply honored by the confidence members have placed in me. I pledge to serve with integrity, transparency, and unwavering dedication to advancing the interests of persons with albinism across Nigeria,” she stated.
Omolola acknowledged the numerous challenges confronting persons with albinism, including discrimination, harmful stereotypes, social exclusion, limited access to quality healthcare, barriers to education and employment, as well as concerns surrounding personal safety and security.
She pledged that her administration would prioritize policies and initiatives aimed at addressing these challenges while creating an environment where persons with albinism can thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development.
According to her, the new leadership will focus on strengthening advocacy efforts to protect and promote the rights of persons with albinism, while also intensifying public awareness campaigns to combat myths, misconceptions, stigma, and discrimination that continue to affect the community.
Expanding Access to Healthcare
One of the key priorities outlined by the new president is improving access to healthcare services for persons with albinism, particularly in areas such as eye care, skin cancer prevention, and mental health support.
Experts have consistently highlighted the unique health challenges faced by people with albinism, including heightened vulnerability to skin cancer due to prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation and visual impairments that often require specialized medical attention.
Omolola emphasized that her administration would work closely with government institutions, healthcare providers, development partners, and civil society organizations to ensure that persons with albinism receive the support and services necessary to live healthy and productive lives.
Building on a Legacy of Advocacy
The newly elected president also paid tribute to former leaders of the association, acknowledging their sacrifices and contributions to advancing the rights and welfare of persons with albinism in Nigeria.
She noted that the achievements recorded over the years have laid a solid foundation upon which the new executive intends to build.
“Our predecessors have worked tirelessly to bring the issues affecting persons with albinism to national attention. We are committed to consolidating those gains and taking our advocacy to greater heights,” she said.
Electoral Committee Commends Members
Speaking after the election, Chairman of the AAN Electoral Committee, Aghanti Sunday Smith, commended delegates, candidates, and committee members for ensuring a smooth and successful electoral process.
He praised members for demonstrating maturity, discipline, and commitment to democratic values throughout the convention.
According to Smith, the conduct of candidates during the campaigns reflected the growing strength and unity within the association, as aspirants focused on issues and ideas rather than personal attacks.
“The election has come and gone, and we must now move forward together as one family. I commend all candidates for their sportsmanship and all delegates for their active participation in making this process a success,” he said.
Smith called on members nationwide to unite behind the newly elected National Executive Council and support its efforts to strengthen the association and advance the interests of persons with albinism.
Renewed Hope for the Albinism Community
The convention concluded on a high note, with delegates expressing optimism about the future direction of the association under the new leadership.
Stakeholders reiterated the need for stronger partnerships with government agencies, development organizations, the private sector, and the media to address the social, economic, and health-related challenges confronting persons with albinism.
For many attendees, the election represents more than a routine leadership transition—it signals renewed hope for a more inclusive society where persons with albinism can enjoy equal rights, opportunities, and protection from discrimination.
As the newly elected National Executive Council assumes office, expectations are high that the association will deepen its advocacy efforts, expand empowerment programs, and continue championing the cause of inclusion and social justice for thousands of persons with albinism across Nigeria.
With a fresh leadership team in place and a clear vision for the future, the Albinism Association of Nigeria appears poised to strengthen its role as a leading voice for the rights, welfare, and empowerment of persons with albinism, both nationally and internationally.
