South Africa Pays Courtesy Visit to Nigeria’s Diplomatic Mission, Announces Closure of Embassy in São Tomé

Diplomatic ties and long-standing friendship took centre stage on January 13, 2026, as the Ambassadors of the Republic of South Africa paid a courtesy visit to Ambassador Dr. Christopher Nwanoro, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim (CDA ai) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The visit, held in an atmosphere of warmth and mutual respect, was primarily to convey New Year greetings to the Nigerian envoy, while also formally notifying him of South Africa’s decision to close its Embassy in São Tomé by March 31, 2026. The engagement underscored the enduring tradition of diplomatic courtesy and open communication between both countries.

During the meeting, the South African Ambassadors explained that the planned closure of the Embassy is an administrative decision and does not in any way reflect a weakening of relations. They stressed that South Africa remains firmly committed to maintaining and strengthening its bilateral engagement with Nigeria and other African partners through alternative diplomatic channels.

Ambassador Dr. Christopher Nwanoro warmly welcomed the delegation and expressed Nigeria’s appreciation for the visit and the transparency shown in formally communicating the development. He acknowledged South Africa’s long history of cooperation and solidarity with Nigeria, noting that the relationship between both countries has been built on shared African values, mutual respect, and a commitment to regional development and continental unity.

Both sides reaffirmed their appreciation for the longstanding partnership between Nigeria and South Africa, which spans diplomacy, trade, regional cooperation, and people-to-people relations. They equally emphasized a shared resolve to sustain cordial relations and continuous dialogue, despite changes in diplomatic representation in São Tomé.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with assurances that bilateral relations between Nigeria and South Africa remain strong and forward-looking. As Africa’s two leading nations continue to play critical roles on the continent and the global stage, both parties reiterated their commitment to cooperation, consultation, and enduring friendship in the years ahead.
