The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) has plunged into crisis following the dramatic impeachment of its chairman, Engr. Joseph Kaura Wakili.
In a stormy meeting held on September 20, 2025, Cyprian Ekwensi Centre, Area 10, Garki, Abuja, the executive council passed a vote of no confidence in Wakili’s leadership, accusing him of embezzlement, dishonesty, abuse of office, and dictatorship.
Out of 21 members present, 17 voted in favor of his removal—a two-thirds majority that sealed his fate under the association’s constitution.
THE ALLEGATIONS
The impeachment letter, seen by this magazine, laid out damning charges:
- Misappropriation of Property: Wakili allegedly sold Agricultural equipments, a farming machine, fertilizer, agrochemicals, and a sprayer—donated by the **National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD). The equipment, meant to support members, allegedly ended up in private hands, with proceeds reportedly pocketed by Wakili —and pocketed the proceeds. After months of pressure, he refunded *₦295,000* on September 16, 2025, but executives insisted the act was embezzlement and breach of trust.
“This is beyond carelessness; it’s outright embezzlement,” one executive member told our correspondent.

- Abuse of Office: He was accused of hijacking the association’s official email and communication channels, locking out the Secretariat and using them for personal purposes.
- Poor Representation: Despite attending high-profile events, including a one-week CBM program, Wakili allegedly failed to submit reports or update members.
- Dictatorial Leadership: Executives said he sidelined the council, running the association as a “one-man show” in breach of JONAPWD’s ethos of collective leadership.
“YOU ARE HEREBY IMPEACHED”
In a blunt resolution, the council declared:
“We the Executives, having conducted a thorough investigation, hereby pass a VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE on you and your leadership. You are hereby IMPEACHED.”
The notice ordered Wakili to step down immediately and hand over all association property and documents to the Secretary General.
He was also warned to stop “parading himself” as chairman henceforth.
WHO TAKES OVER?
In the meantime, leadership responsibilities will fall to other key executives, including Vice Chairman II, Sussan Kelechi Ihuoma; Secretary General, Aderibigbe Oluwasola; and PRO I, Kalu Eke.
The notice was copied to the JONAPWD National President, National PRO, National Chief Whip, North Central Coordinator, and the association’s partners, signaling the gravity of the decision.
A HOUSE DIVIDED
The impeachment has split opinion in the disability community.
“This action was long overdue. He forgot JONAPWD is not his personal property,” one executive told our reporter.
But there is fears the move could cause internal divisions.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
JONAPWD FCT plays a central role in pushing for policies and inclusion for persons with disabilities in Abuja. The impeachment raises questions about accountability, transparency, and credibility at the heart of the association.
WHAT NEXT FOR WAKILI?
As of press time, Wakili had not issued a public response. We await to see his next move, he may fight the impeachment legally or attempt to rally supporters.
But the message from his colleagues was unmistakable:
“No one is above the constitution. This is about protecting the soul of JONAPWD.”
