São Tomé and Príncipe – July 2025
In a solemn yet symbolic diplomatic gesture, Ambassador Chris Nwanoro, Nigeria’s envoy to São Tomé and Príncipe and a distinguished member of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), received His Excellency, the Ambassador of the Embassy of Libya to São Tomé and Príncipe, on an official condolence visit. The visit was to commiserate with the people and Government of Nigeria on the recent passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR.
The meeting, held at the Nigerian Embassy in São Tomé, was marked by expressions of solidarity, empathy, and shared reflection on the legacy of the late Nigerian leader. Former President Buhari, who served two terms in office, was known for his strong anti-corruption stance and efforts to reposition Nigeria on the global map.

Ambassador Chris Nwanoro, who is visually impaired, is one of Africa’s most prominent diplomats with disability. He represents the continent on the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, a prestigious role that underscores his deep commitment to advancing inclusion, equity, and the rights of marginalized populations globally.
Speaking during the visit, the Libyan Ambassador praised the late President Buhari’s contribution to regional peace and his diplomatic efforts across Africa and the Arab world. “President Buhari was a statesman whose influence transcended national borders. Libya and Nigeria have long enjoyed strong bilateral relations, and his passing is not only a loss to Nigeria but to the entire continent,” he stated.

In his response, Ambassador Nwanoro expressed appreciation for the Libyan envoy’s visit and the show of support from the Government and people of Libya. “This moment of shared grief reminds us of our unity as African nations. President Buhari served with dedication, and we are honored that the international community continues to recognize his leadership, even in death,” he said.
Amb. Nwanoro also highlighted the importance of fostering diplomatic relations that are inclusive and representative of all voices, including those of persons with disabilities. His own appointment and service are a testament to the growing recognition of the abilities and leadership capacity of persons with disabilities in global affairs.
The meeting concluded with the signing of the condolence register and the exchange of solidarity messages between the two diplomatic missions.
As global tributes continue to pour in for former President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, this high-level condolence visit serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of nations and the power of diplomacy in times of mourning. It also reaffirms the growing role of inclusive leadership in shaping modern diplomacy—where diversity is not just acknowledged, but celebrated.
