Kano Government Reaffirms Commitment to Disability Inclusion, Pledges Comprehensive Support for PWDs

KANO—In a bold reaffirmation of its commitment to social equity and inclusive governance, the Kano State Government has vowed to deepen its efforts toward the welfare, empowerment, and full societal integration of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

This declaration was made by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, during a courtesy visit to his office by the leadership of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disability (JONAPWD), Kano State Chapter.

Speaking passionately during the visit, Comrade Waiya underscored that disability should never be equated with inability, stressing that individuals with disabilities possess unique talents and untapped potentials capable of propelling the state’s development to greater heights. According to him, the resilience, strength, and creativity of PWDs should be viewed as assets to society rather than liabilities.

“Disability is not a limitation—it is a powerful narrative of strength, determination, and boundless inspiration. People with disabilities are integral members of our society and deserve the same opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the development of our dear state,” he said.

Waiya assured the delegation that the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs, under his leadership, would not only continue to advocate for inclusive policies but would also work hand-in-hand with the Ministry of Women Affairs, Children, and the Disabled to ensure that no one is left behind in the execution of government programs. He pledged that all ongoing and future empowerment schemes would deliberately include persons with disabilities as key beneficiaries.

“The administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is driven by empathy, inclusion, and fairness. His Excellency’s compassionate leadership places premium value on the dignity, rights, and welfare of persons with special needs,” Waiya added, reaffirming the governor’s unwavering support for disability-inclusive development.

In what appeared to be a significant moment during the visit, the Kano State Chairman of JONAPWD, Muhammad Musa Shaga, called for the establishment of a dedicated Commission for Persons with Disabilities in Kano State. According to him, such a body would serve as a critical institution for coordinating disability affairs, mainstreaming inclusive governance, and driving sustainable interventions across various sectors.

Shaga commended the current administration for its openness and willingness to engage with the disability community. He expressed optimism that, under Governor Yusuf’s leadership, Kano would set the pace for disability rights and social inclusion in Nigeria.

“We believe that with strong political will and committed partnerships like this, Kano State can become a national model for disability inclusion and accessibility. Establishing a Commission for PWDs will go a long way in institutionalizing these efforts,” he said.

The meeting ended with a renewed sense of hope among the representatives of JONAPWD, who lauded the commissioner for his proactive stance and pledged to continue supporting government efforts aimed at improving the quality of life for persons with disabilities.

As the conversation around disability rights continues to gain momentum in Kano State, stakeholders are optimistic that this renewed commitment will translate into real change—through inclusive policies, equitable access to services, and the dismantling of systemic barriers that hinder full participation of PWDs in public life.

Indeed, with deliberate actions and inclusive governance, Kano is setting a new tone for disability advocacy and laying the groundwork for a society where everyone, regardless of ability, has a seat at the table.
