Abuja, Nigeria – In a significant step towards economic empowerment and social inclusion, The Leprosy Mission Nigeria (TLMN), in collaboration with Leprosy Mission Sweden, has empowered eight persons with disabilities with sewing machines and accessories under the SCRINN Project (Strengthening Community Resilience in Northern Nigeria).
The presentation ceremony took place on Thursday at TLMN’s headquarters in Abuja, where the beneficiaries—tailors, shoemakers, and bag makers—received the much-needed equipment to enhance their productivity and financial independence.
A Commitment to Livelihood Support
Speaking at the event, Goodluck Udoh, TLMN’s FCT Project Coordinator for the SCRINN Project, highlighted that the initiative was designed to provide livelihood support to persons with disabilities, equipping them with tools to sustain and grow their businesses.
“This project has been successfully implemented in other states, and today, we are here in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to fulfill the livelihood support component,” Udoh stated.
He emphasized that the SCRINN Project not only focuses on economic empowerment but also includes advocacy and the prevention of disabilities, particularly leprosy-related disabilities.
“Today, we are giving out sewing machines and their accessories to eight beneficiaries who have honed their skills in tailoring, bag making, and shoe making,” he added.
Udoh encouraged the beneficiaries to use the equipment effectively and efficiently to maximize their productivity and profits. He also assured them that TLMN would conduct regular follow-ups to ensure that the machines are being put to good use.

A Life-Changing Opportunity for Beneficiaries
For the recipients, this initiative is more than just receiving tools—it is a life-changing opportunity. Many of them had struggled due to a lack of proper equipment, limiting their ability to meet customer demands and expand their businesses.
Agatha Ola Egwu, a bag maker and one of the beneficiaries, expressed her deep gratitude to TLMN for the support.
“This is a dream come true for me. In my bag-making business, I used to borrow sewing machines from neighbors, which came with costs and inconveniences. Now, with my own machine, I can increase my production, improve my work efficiency, and boost my profits,” she said with excitement.
Another beneficiary, Solomon Agulanna, a shoemaker, shared similar sentiments.
“I am truly grateful to TLMN for this wonderful gift. This machine will significantly improve my work process and help me earn a better income. I promise to put it to good use and make the most of this opportunity,” Agulanna said while receiving his equipment.
TLMN Urges Beneficiaries to Maximize the Opportunity
Representing the National Director of TLMN, Dr. Sunday Udoh, at the event, Mrs. Orowo Stephen, Head of Human Resources and Administration, encouraged the beneficiaries to make effective use of the machines to transform their lives.
“This is an opportunity to become financially independent and improve your quality of life. We expect you to use these machines wisely and meet the expectations of TLMN and the donors,” she stated.
She reaffirmed that TLMN remains committed to empowering persons with disabilities, ensuring they have access to the resources and opportunities needed to thrive.
Driving Economic Empowerment for Persons with Disabilities
The SCRINN Project is one of TLMN’s many initiatives aimed at fostering economic empowerment, disability inclusion, and community resilience. By providing essential tools and vocational support, the project helps persons with disabilities become self-reliant, breaking the cycle of dependence and financial hardship.
With continued follow-ups and mentorship, these beneficiaries are expected to expand their businesses, create employment opportunities, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
As TLMN and its partners continue to implement life-changing programs, this initiative serves as a powerful reminder that with the right support, persons with disabilities can achieve economic independence and thrive in their chosen fields.
