TLMN Empowers Persons with Disabilities, Individuals With Leprosy in Kogi with Start-Up Kits Worth Over N8 Million

In a bid to improve the living standards of persons with disabilities (PWDs) and individuals affected by leprosy, The Leprosy Mission Nigeria (TLMN) has empowered 15 beneficiaries in Kogi State with start-up kits valued at over N8 million. This initiative aims to foster self-reliance, combat societal discrimination, and enhance economic opportunities for these vulnerable groups.

A Vision of Inclusion and Zero Leprosy

Speaking during the empowerment event, the National Director of Leprosy Mission Nigeria, Dr. Sunday Udo, who was represented by Sandra Sochima Ijere, outlined the organization’s broader vision of an inclusive Nigeria free of leprosy and its associated challenges.

“TLMN envisions a Nigeria where leprosy is defeated, and persons affected by leprosy and disabilities live life to the fullest. We are working towards achieving ‘Zero Leprosy,’ which translates to zero transmission, zero disabilities caused by leprosy, and zero discrimination against persons affected by leprosy and disabilities,” Dr. Udo said.

He highlighted TLMN’s partnership with The Leprosy Mission Sweden on the SCRINN Project—Strengthening Community Resilience in Northern Nigeria. This initiative aims to build resilient communities equipped to advocate for their rights, sustain livelihoods, and contribute to a more inclusive society.

“In addition to distributing start-up kits, we engage in awareness creation to educate the public that leprosy is both curable and preventable. This is key to eliminating the stigma and discrimination faced by those affected,” Dr. Udo added.

Empowering Through Vocational Training

Dr. Udo revealed that, as part of its commitment to the Kogi State government, TLMN enrolled 50 children of persons affected by leprosy and disabilities into vocational skills training programs in 2022. These participants, drawn from Oyi, Isanlu, Mopa-Muro, Okene, Adavi, Okehi, Omala, and Lokoja communities, were trained in various trades, including baking and pastries, tailoring, shoe and bag making, automobile repairs, welding, and computer and phone repairs.

By October 2023, 33 of these participants had already received start-up kits to help them launch their businesses. The latest empowerment extends this initiative, with 15 more individuals receiving the tools needed to transform their training into sustainable livelihoods.

“These kits represent more than just tools; they symbolize hope, self-sustainability, and a brighter future. We are committed to mentoring and monitoring all beneficiaries to ensure they achieve independence and contribute significantly to their communities,” Dr. Udo remarked.

Resilience and Responsibility

Addressing the beneficiaries, Kogi State Programme Officer for the project, Mr. Reuben Isaiah, congratulated them on their selection and encouraged them to utilize the items responsibly.

“You have been chosen because of your resilience and determination. These items are not to be sold or misused. To ensure accountability, beneficiaries will sign an undertaking to use the equipment for its intended purpose,” Mr. Isaiah said.

He emphasized the magnitude of the gesture, noting that the start-up kits are collectively worth over N8 million. He expressed gratitude to The Leprosy Mission Nigeria for its consistent support for PWDs and leprosy-affected individuals.

Commendations and Community Support

The event drew praise from various stakeholders, including the Chairperson of the Kogi NGOs Network (KONGONET), Idris Ozovehe Muraina, who lauded TLMN for its unwavering commitment to uplifting vulnerable populations in the state.

“Your efforts to empower those in need are truly commendable and have made a significant impact in our communities. We assure you of our continued collaboration as we work together to create a more inclusive and equitable environment for all,” Muraina said.

He also congratulated the beneficiaries and urged them to maximize the opportunities provided by the empowerment program.

The Commissioner of Women Affairs, represented by Onumoko Adeniyi, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the transformative potential of the initiative. “This gesture from The Leprosy Mission Nigeria is not just charity—it’s a step toward creating lasting change. I urge the beneficiaries to utilize these resources effectively and make the best out of them,” she stated.

A Step Towards Lasting Impact

The empowerment program stands as a testament to The Leprosy Mission Nigeria’s enduring commitment to supporting PWDs and individuals affected by leprosy. By addressing both economic and social challenges, the organization is setting a benchmark for meaningful interventions that foster inclusion, resilience, and self-reliance.

As Dr. Udo aptly put it, “These individuals are not just recipients of aid; they are partners in building a society that recognizes their immense potential and capabilities. With the right support, they can break barriers, inspire change, and contribute to the development of their communities.”

With sustained efforts and collaboration, the dream of an inclusive society where no one is left behind is steadily becoming a reality.
