Adeleke’s Life-Support Initiative Brings Hope to Thousands of Persons With Disabilities in Osun

In a groundbreaking stride toward inclusion and welfare, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has transformed lives with his Life-Support Gadgets Initiative. This landmark program, held at the Nelson Mandela Freedom Park in Osogbo as part of the governor’s second-anniversary celebrations, has touched the lives of thousands of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) across the state.

The event drew an impressive crowd as beneficiaries from all 30 local government areas gathered to receive essential life-support equipment designed to ease their daily struggles and improve their quality of life. Items distributed included wheelchairs, crutches, walking sticks, talking watches, hearing aids, ultraviolet umbrellas, artificial limbs, and specialized items for persons with albinism, such as creams and protective glasses. To complement these aids, free health insurance cards under the Osun Health Insurance Scheme (OHIS) were also handed out.

A Campaign Promise Fulfilled

Governor Adeleke, visibly elated, addressed the beneficiaries and stakeholders, reiterating his administration’s commitment to the welfare of the vulnerable. “Today is a joyous occasion for me as I fulfill another of my campaign promises,” he said. “When I campaigned for office, I pledged to prioritize the welfare of every Osun resident, especially the most vulnerable among us. This initiative is a testament to that commitment.”

He highlighted previous accomplishments under his leadership, including the enrollment of over 25,000 pensioners into OHIS for free healthcare earlier this year. The governor noted that his administration has consistently placed the welfare of marginalized groups at the forefront, partnering with organizations like Rotary International to provide free medical and surgical outreach programs.

“This initiative is not just about fulfilling a promise; it’s about affirming our shared humanity,” Adeleke added. “Persons with disabilities are integral members of our society, and their inclusion is vital to our collective progress. Today, we are not just giving out gadgets; we are giving hope and empowering our people.”

A Comprehensive Approach to Healthcare

The initiative extends beyond the distribution of equipment. Governor Adeleke announced plans for free surgical procedures for PWDs with treatable conditions, underscoring his administration’s focus on sustainable healthcare solutions. “We are not stopping here. This government is committed to ensuring that healthcare in Osun becomes the best in the nation,” he declared.

Highlighting recent efforts to curb the exodus of health workers, Adeleke cited prompt payment of allowances and other incentives as part of a broader strategy to stabilize the state’s healthcare system. “From the Imole Free Medical and Surgical Outreach to addressing challenges faced by our health workers, we are laying the foundation for a robust healthcare system that serves everyone,” he emphasized.

Testimonials and Impact

The event was marked by stories of gratitude from beneficiaries. One recipient, a visually impaired teacher, described how the talking watch he received would help him regain a sense of independence. “This gift is more than just a gadget; it’s a lifeline. It shows that this administration values and includes people like me,” he said.

For albinos in attendance, the provision of ultraviolet umbrellas, glasses, and skin-protecting creams was life-changing. A mother of two children with albinism expressed her joy, saying, “For the first time, someone understands the unique needs of my children. Governor Adeleke has truly given us a voice.”

Recognition for Stakeholders

The event also saw accolades for the leadership and staff of the Osun Health Insurance Agency (OSHIA). Dr. Rasaq Akindele, Executive Secretary of OSHIA, revealed that 9,500 PWDs, including those with spinal cord injuries, sensory impairments, and other conditions, have been enrolled in OHIS at no cost.

“This initiative is unprecedented in Osun’s history,” Dr. Akindele said. “Governor Adeleke’s administration is breaking barriers and setting new standards for inclusion. We are determined to continue easing the lives of these individuals and making Osun a model for others.”

A Vision for the Future

As the program concluded, Governor Adeleke reaffirmed his government’s dedication to fostering an inclusive society. “Today is just the beginning. We will continue to prioritize the welfare of the vulnerable and ensure that no one is left behind in our quest for a better Osun. Together, we can create a state where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can thrive.”

The Life-Support Gadgets Initiative is more than a charitable gesture; it is a bold statement of inclusivity and progress. For thousands of PLWDs in Osun, it is a beacon of hope and a reminder that their voices are being heard.
