Osun State Govt Rolls Out Free Healthcare Services for Disability Community

By Kehinde Onitiju, Osogbo

In a groundbreaking move toward inclusive governance, the Osun State Government has launched a free healthcare initiative targeting persons with disabilities (PWDs), reinforcing its commitment to enhancing the well-being of marginalized communities. This development has earned commendation from disability advocates, with Hope for the Future Disability Initiatives, a leading advocacy group in the state, passing a vote of confidence on Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration for its proactive and inclusive policies.

The Executive Director of Hope for the Future Disability Initiatives, Prince Onitiju Kehinde, who is also the former chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), lauded the governor’s leadership during an official visit to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital Complex in Osogbo. The visit was led by Princess Olusola Adewusi, wife of the Deputy Governor of Osun State, to meet a physically challenged boy—the first beneficiary of the state’s free healthcare program for persons with special needs.

Governor Adeleke’s Inclusive Governance Praised

Speaking during the visit, Prince Kehinde emphasized that the Adeleke administration has prioritized the welfare of persons with disabilities, making it a central pillar of governance. “This administration has shown that disability inclusion is not just an afterthought—it’s a priority,” Kehinde stated. “We are seeing real action, not just promises. Life is becoming better for persons with disabilities in Osun State because the government genuinely listens to our concerns and implements solutions.”

He noted that access to free healthcare is a critical step in breaking down barriers that often prevent PWDs from leading healthy and dignified lives. According to Kehinde, the government’s responsiveness demonstrates a model of governance that other states in Nigeria should emulate.

Olori Adewusi Commends Efforts of State Government

Princess Olusola Adewusi, wife of the Deputy Governor, used the occasion to express her heartfelt appreciation to Governor Adeleke for his unwavering dedication to meeting the needs of Osun residents, particularly those with disabilities. “The governor has demonstrated a commitment to inclusive governance that goes beyond rhetoric,” she said. “He is working tirelessly to ensure that no one is left behind, especially the most vulnerable among us.”

The Deputy Governor’s wife also commended the Executive Secretary of the Osun Health Insurance Agency, Dr. Akindele, and his team for their effective execution of the state’s health initiatives. “Dr. Akindele and his team deserve our applause. They are ensuring that the health needs of every resident, including those with disabilities, are met with dignity and care,” Adewusi added.

Emotional Response from Beneficiary’s Family

The visit to the teaching hospital became an emotional moment as Mrs. Olagbenke Bello, the mother of the boy receiving free healthcare, was overwhelmed with gratitude for the state’s initiative. Fighting back tears, she expressed her deep appreciation for the government’s efforts.

“I never imagined that my child would receive such care, and for free,” Mrs. Bello said. “This initiative gives us hope. It’s not just about the healthcare; it’s about knowing that the government cares about families like ours.”

Her emotional testimony highlighted the impact of inclusive policies on the lives of ordinary citizens, especially those often neglected by the system.

A Commitment to Sustained Inclusion

The Osun State Government’s healthcare initiative is part of its broader effort to promote inclusion and accessibility in all sectors. Under Governor Adeleke’s leadership, the state has expanded healthcare services to ensure that vulnerable groups—including women, children, and persons with disabilities—receive the care they need without financial barriers.

Princess Adewusi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining the program, pledging that the state will continue working with disability advocacy groups to identify and address emerging challenges. “This is just the beginning,” she said. “We are committed to expanding access to healthcare and ensuring that every person with special needs in Osun State has the support they deserve.”

Hope for a Better Future

Prince Kehinde called on other states and the federal government to adopt similar inclusive policies. “Osun State is showing the way forward,” he said. “Inclusion is not just a policy—it’s a moral obligation. Every government in Nigeria must recognize the importance of prioritizing the needs of persons with disabilities.”

Kehinde further noted that the government’s actions reflect a deeper philosophy of compassion and responsibility, which has the potential to transform society. “We are not asking for charity—we are asking for opportunity and access. And that is exactly what Governor Adeleke’s administration is delivering.”

Conclusion

The launch of the free healthcare program for persons with disabilities marks a turning point in Osun State’s journey toward inclusive governance. With the continued partnership between government, advocacy groups, and the disability community, Osun State is becoming a beacon of hope for PWDs in Nigeria.

As the state moves forward, the message is clear: Inclusion matters, and every citizen deserves a chance to thrive. With initiatives like this, Osun is building a future where no one is left behind, setting a precedent that others will be inspired to follow.

Governor Adeleke’s administration has not only earned the trust and admiration of the disability community but also created a model for how governance can be used as a tool for empowerment and social change.
