In a significant stride towards fostering inclusivity and empowerment, the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat were present at the graduation and empowerment of women and girls with disabilities put together by Advocacy For Women With Disabilities (AWWDI) on April 24, 2024. The event, graced by the Pioneer Mandate Secretary, Hon. Dr. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, marked a pivotal moment in the journey towards uplifting the lives of vulnerable women across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Addressing the audience with warmth and enthusiasm, Hon. Dr. Benjamins-Laniyi expressed heartfelt gratitude to the UNFPA for their steadfast support and AWWDI for the successful implementation of the empowering initiative. She lauded the impactful efforts aimed at providing social-economic empowerment training, a vital step in enhancing the livelihoods of women and girls with disabilities.
With a resolute commitment to driving economic empowerment for women, including those with disabilities, Hon. Dr. Benjamins-Laniyi unveiled strategic plans designed to promote development and capacity building. Among these initiatives is the revitalization of the Mariam Babangida Skill Acquisition Centre in Yangoji, Abuja, as a pivotal resource hub catering to the needs of vulnerable and grassroots women. Through vocational training and capacity building opportunities, this revitalization aims to empower women with valuable skills for socio-economic advancement.
In a visionary move towards sustainable development, Hon. Dr. Benjamins-Laniyi advocated for collaboration with the UNFPA Fund to support innovative projects such as the “Womenufacturing” initiative. This groundbreaking project, in partnership with a Chinese company, seeks to convert rice production waste into paper, providing women with income-generating opportunities while promoting environmental conservation.
Furthermore, the initiative includes a tree planting campaign spearheaded by women, including those with disabilities. This dual-purpose endeavor not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also offers income-generating avenues for women participants.
The comprehensive strategy championed by Hon. Dr. Benjamins-Laniyi underscores the Secretariat’s unwavering commitment to empowering vulnerable women, including orphans and teenage girls, across the FCT. By promoting social-economic empowerment, the Secretariat aims to create a more inclusive society where every woman and girl, regardless of ability, can thrive and contribute to the nation’s progress.
