Abia State Government Commits to Enhancing Education and Healthcare for Cerebral Palsy Children as TSCF Marks 2024 Awareness Month

Special Assistant to the Governor on Disability Affairs underscores government’s dedication to supporting Persons with Disabilities

In a significant display of commitment to the welfare of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), Mr. David Anyaele, the Special Assistant to the Abia State Governor on People with Disability, has reiterated the government’s resolve to bolster access to quality education and healthcare services, particularly for children with Cerebral Palsy (CP).

Speaking during The Straight Child Foundation’s (TSCF) special March edition of the Parent Support Group to commemorate the 2024 Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month, Mr. Anyaele emphasized the importance of eliminating stigmatization and discrimination against CP children, urging parents to champion awareness efforts and collaborate with the government to foster inclusivity.

Highlighting the government’s commitment, Mr. Anyaele underscored the allocation of over 20% and 15% of the budget to education and health, respectively, reflecting a prioritization of social welfare and aligning with Governor Alex Otti’s vision for universal access to essential services.

Drawing from personal experience as a person with a disability, Mr. Anyaele emphasized the resilience and potential of CP children, urging parents to support their children in reaching their full potential. He commended TSCF for its advocacy efforts and called for collaboration to address prevailing challenges faced by CP individuals in the state.

Mrs. Priscilla Otti, the wife of the governor, recently launched a data capturing initiative for Persons with Disabilities in Abia State, aimed at facilitating better planning and inclusion. Mr. Anyaele reiterated the government’s dedication to promoting an inclusive society and enhancing the quality of life for PWDs and their families.

Dr. Chidomere Roseann, a Consultant Pediatrician/Child Neurologist, emphasized the importance of early detection and intervention in managing CP symptoms and maximizing independence for affected individuals. She underscored the lifelong nature of CP and the significance of holistic treatment approaches to improve quality of life.

The founder of TSCF, Dr. Peace Amaraegbulam, highlighted the significance of Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month in fostering community support and raising awareness about the condition. The “GoGreen4CP” campaign, symbolized by the color green, signifies hope and resilience, reflecting the strength of individuals living with CP.

Mr. Dinichukwu Olise, a medical scholar living with CP, shared his inspirational story, underscoring the potential for success and achievement despite challenges posed by the condition.

Cerebral Palsy, a group of neurological disorders affecting movement and coordination, remains a challenge for affected individuals. However, with early intervention and support, individuals with CP can lead fulfilling lives and contribute meaningfully to society.

By fostering collaboration between government, healthcare professionals, and advocacy organizations like TSCF, Abia State aims to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for Persons with Disabilities, ensuring they have equal access to opportunities and resources for a brighter future.
