The Executive Secretary National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) Mr James David Lalu has said that the Commission is quite interested in collaborating with as many pertinent organisations as possible to ensure the achievements of its statutory mandate. Lalu disclosed this recently in his office during a meeting with United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s Abuja Regional Office representatives.
In his remarks, the ES bewailed the high level of Children with Disabilities who are out of school, adding that working with UNESCO will support the Commission to take the children back to school. He further stated that the Commission’s zonal Rehabilitation Centres will be established in the States to enhance easy access and connection to various localities.
Mr. Lalu, however said that some States like Kaduna, Gombe, Kwara and Kogi have been visited by the Commission and were prevailed upon to start up the processes at that level, adding that the commission is charged with the responsibilities of collation and proper follow up of bills in the creations of State offices.
While commending the ES for his efforts towards putting the Commission on the cause of progress, the Officer-In-Charge of Social and Human Sciences, UNESCO Regional Office, Abuja, Mrs Nneka Okafor said that UNESCO is in support of the creation of the State offices which they believe will improve the lives of Persons with Disabilities.
She prayed that the commission will attain greater heights which will positively advance the wellbeing of Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria.
