Workers Day: JOMIDA Foundation Urges Government To Take Action on Employment Quota for PWDs

Comrade Chris Agbo, the Executive Director of JOMIDA Foundation For Persons with Disabilities, has called on the government to expedite action in implementing Section 29 of the Discrimination Against Persons With Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2018. This section mandates a 5 percent employment quota for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). Agbo made this plea as the world commemorates the Day of Workers.

In his address, Agbo emphasized that as the world celebrates the contributions of workers, it is imperative to acknowledge the rights of PWDs to gainful employment. He stressed that PWDs often face significant barriers to employment due to societal prejudices and structural inequalities. These barriers perpetuate the cycle of poverty among PWDs, depriving them of opportunities for economic empowerment.

While expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 25% to 35% increase in workers’ salaries, Agbo highlighted the need for the government to address the specific challenges faced by Nigerian workers with disabilities. He pointed out that PWDs incur additional costs, such as transportation and the purchase of assistive devices, which can exacerbate financial strain.

Agbo urged the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to adopt disability-inclusive practices in their policies and operations. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that workplaces are accessible to workers with disabilities and that reasonable accommodations are provided to support their participation in the workforce.

Furthermore, Agbo underscored the need for collaborative efforts between government agencies, civil society organizations, and employers to create a more inclusive and supportive work environment for PWDs. He called for the development of comprehensive policies and programs aimed at enhancing the employment prospects and well-being of workers with disabilities.

As JOMIDA Foundation continues its advocacy for the rights of PWDs, Agbo reiterated the organization’s commitment to promoting disability inclusion and empowerment in Nigeria. He urged stakeholders at all levels to prioritize the implementation of inclusive policies and initiatives that uphold the dignity and rights of workers with disabilities.

With Agbo’s passionate plea for action, the call for equal opportunities and inclusivity for PWDs in the workforce resonates strongly, highlighting the importance of collective efforts in building a more equitable and inclusive society.
