The National Commission for Persons with disabilities (NCPWD) was set up a year ago and the Executive Secretary, Mr. James David Lalu was formerly the Chairman, Plateau State Disability Rights Commission and Member, APC National Caretaker Committee representing Persons with Disabilities, was appointed to oversee the day to day activities of the Commission.
He resumed work immediately and since then, the commission has been carrying out a lot of activities. In our usual way of keeping the community of persons with disabilities informed, we visited the Executive Secretary on Thursday, one was to congratulate him for recording one year in the office and two is to hear from him on what NCPWD has been doing for the last one year.
The Executive Secretary in his usual fashion, gave us a warm welcome and granted us audience. In this video below, he spoke about a number of things or areas of their mandate that they have been doing something and what they should be doing going forward.
He spoke about what they are doing in the area of employment, education, housing for persons with disabilities, process to inculcate disability studies in the University Curriculum, awareness creation about disability act, acquiring of a new office for the commission and creating access in the office for persons with disabilities especially for the wheelchair and crutches users and many others things he talked about.
He used the opportunity to thank the Ministry of Humanitarian affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Haijah Sadiya Farouk for her support to the commission and President Muhammadu Buhari who made the whole process possible by signing into law disability bill and establishment of the Commission.
He used the forum to once again call for collaborations from organizations in order to assist the commission achieve its mandate.
Particularly, he asked TQM to partner with the Commission to create awareness among persons with disabilities so that they can identify with what the commission is doing because the commission is meant for persons with disabilities.
