In the pursuit of fostering a more inclusive society, the collaboration between government officials and marginalized communities plays a pivotal role. In Akwa Ibom State, transition chairmen have demonstrated commendable dedication to integrating persons with disabilities into the fabric of society, particularly at the grassroots level. As the Special Assistant to the Governor on Disability, I am deeply appreciative of the significant collaboration between transition chairmen and the disability community across the state.
One notable instance of this collaborative effort is evident in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, where the Transition Chairman has actively engaged with members of the disability community. Through a series of empowerment initiatives, the Transition Chairman has not only shown support for persons with disabilities but has also taken tangible steps towards translating and implementing the A.R.I.S.E Agenda at the grassroots level.
Empowering persons with disabilities is a cornerstone of the belief that “inclusion is strength,” and the Transition Chairman of Nsit Ibom has exemplified this through the provision of mobility aids to members of the disability community. By ensuring access to wheelchairs, crutches, and other mobility aids, the Transition Chairman has enabled persons with disabilities to navigate their surroundings independently and participate more actively in community life, as evidenced during the commemoration of His Excellency Pst. Umo Eno’s diamond birthday celebration.
The impact of these empowerment initiatives is palpable in Nsit Ibom, with members of the disability community expressing profound gratitude for the support they have received. The provision of mobility aids has not only enhanced their quality of life but has also fostered a profound sense of belonging and inclusion within the community.
Looking ahead to the future, there is eager anticipation of even greater impact in Nsit Ibom come May 2024. The collaborative efforts between the Transition Chairman and the disability community are paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable society, where persons with disabilities are afforded the necessary support and resources to thrive.
In my capacity as the Special Assistant to the Governor on Disability, I am heartened by the strides being made in integrating persons with disabilities into the community fabric of Akwa Ibom State. The synergistic collaboration between transition chairmen and the disability community serves as a shining beacon of what can be achieved when collective efforts are directed towards the common goal of inclusivity and empowerment.
Let us continue to champion the cause of persons with disabilities, ensuring that they are provided with equal opportunities to fully participate in society. Together, we can forge a more inclusive and accessible community where every individual, irrespective of ability, is esteemed and valued.
By Mrs. Nnene Bassey, Special Assistant to the Governor on Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)
