Stakeholders Advocate for Workplace Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities

In a significant move towards fostering inclusivity, stakeholders have advocated for the inclusion of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in workplaces. This call was made during the second edition of the Nigeria Business and Disability Network (NBDN) Diversity and Inclusion Conference, held recently in Lagos. The event, themed ‘Disability Inclusion in Corporate Sustainability,’ served as a crucial platform for employers to enhance disability confidence, foster inclusive practices, and promote job readiness for people with disabilities in the workplace.

Omobolanle Victor-Laniyan, the chair of NBDN, emphasized the growing recognition of the need to integrate PWDs into roles that match their qualifications. “Over the years, there has been an increased call for corporates to integrate people with disabilities into roles befitting their qualifications,” Victor-Laniyan stated. This sentiment reflects a broader societal push towards creating equitable opportunities for all individuals, regardless of their physical or mental abilities.

According to the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Nigeria is home to an estimated 30 million PWDs, many of whom face marginalization due to factors such as gender, poverty, and age. The conference highlighted the urgent need to address these disparities and ensure that PWDs have equal access to opportunities across all sectors.

Victor-Laniyan underscored the importance of including disability in Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) frameworks. “Incorporating disability into ESG strategies not only enhances company value and returns for shareholders but also significantly reduces workplace inequality,” she added. This approach aligns with global trends towards more socially responsible business practices, where inclusivity is seen as a key component of corporate sustainability.

The conference provided a valuable opportunity for employers to learn about best practices in disability inclusion and to network with experts in the field. By promoting job readiness and creating a more inclusive work environment, companies can benefit from the diverse perspectives and talents that PWDs bring to the table.

In conclusion, the NBDN Diversity and Inclusion Conference has reinforced the importance of disability inclusion in corporate sustainability. As stakeholders continue to advocate for these changes, it is hoped that more companies will recognize the value of integrating PWDs into their workforce, thereby fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.
