A group known as lnner Eye Foundation, has concerned over challenges faces by persons with disability. The organisation also urged the government to make their welfare a priority so that they can contribute to nation building.
Speaking at an event it organised with the theme: “Who you help?” at the National Stadium, Lagos, the Convener, Kelly Blind, disclosed that the event was to deliberate on issues affecting such group of persons, which include neglect, lack of inclusion in government budgets and programmes, discrimination, and stigmatisation. They also used the forum pray for a better Nigeria.
The foundation called on the government to include persons with disabilities in the country’s budget and should protect their rights.
“Persons people with disability don’t have a platform where they can rub minds and have fun, hence lnner Eye Foundation has created this platform to address their challenges and empower them. We have one voice to spearhead our course …” he said.
The group observed that people with disability were not represented in the country’s activities, offices, policies and welfare, alleging that Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) office was not doing enough for them.
They claimed that some para -Olympics members and sportsmen who won medals for the country were neglected, saying their bonuses and allowances were not paid as and when due.
Lagos State Chairman of Albinism, Mr Tola Ojuorin, charged all persons with disability to unite among themselves. He also urged stakeholders and families to work with the society to tackle the obstacles, injustices and discrimination against them.
The foundation appreciated the support of the Founder /Patron- Kirti’s Kare Foundation and founder Kirti Sudhanshu, Mr D. N. Gawankar, who promised to give 100 artificial limbs, free eye test and treatment for the group. Another group also provided 30 guide canes to the visually –impaired persons.
