NSCDC and Governor’s Special Assistant Join Forces to Protect Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Akwa Ibom State

In a historic meeting held at the Akwa Ibom State Commandant Office, On the 15th Of April, 2024, State Commandant of the Nigeria Security Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Special Assistant to the Governor on Persons with Disabilities convened to address critical concerns within the disability community and advocate for enhanced collaboration to safeguard their rights and well-being in the state.

The meeting centered on the pressing need to preserve lives within the disability community, eradicate human rights violations, and ensure comprehensive protection across all 31 Local Government Areas. A pivotal initiative discussed was the establishment of disability desks within the NSCDC to streamline the reporting of abuse and violations. The participants emphasized the imperative to shield women and girls with disabilities from any form of sexual abuse or gender-based violence, asserting the strict enforcement of the VAPP Law to hold rights abusers accountable.

During the deliberations, the Commandant lauded the Governor for his steadfast commitment to uplifting the lives of the vulnerable in the state. He also commended the Special Assistant for her unwavering advocacy on behalf of the disability community. Pledging continuous support and collaboration with all stakeholders, the Commandant affirmed the NSCDC’s dedication to realizing the goals of the A. R. I. S. E Agenda, aimed at promoting inclusivity and empowerment.

Underlining the significance of inter-agency cooperation, the Commandant emphasized the importance of working hand-in-hand with relevant agencies and organizations to address the challenges faced by persons with disabilities effectively. He assured that the NSCDC would prioritize the safety and well-being of individuals within the disability community, swiftly responding to any reports of abuse or violations.

In essence, the meeting highlighted the shared commitment of the NSCDC and the Governor’s Special Assistant on Persons with Disabilities to create a safe and inclusive environment for all members of the disability community in Akwa Ibom State. It underscored the importance of collective efforts in upholding the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities, ensuring their full integration and participation in society. The collaboration between the NSCDC and the disability community represents a significant step towards achieving a more equitable and just society for all.
