NNAD seeks full Inclusion and participation in National Census for Disaggregated data of PWDs

Nigerian National Association of the Deaf NNAD have demanded for Disaggregated data of the Deaf.

The National President of NNAD, Dr. Chidi Topaz Olujie speaking during a press conference organized by the group on Wednesday in Abuja said with over 9 miillon Deaf Persons in Nigeria, there is need for Disaggregated data is critical towards understanding the deprivations and economic conditions of the Deaf.

Deaf Persons have been sidelined for decades from most development programmes and policies due to lack of verifiable data of the Deaf.He brought government attention to National Population Commission’s preparatory exercises with the initial Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) which the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and DeafBlind were not considered and they also live in these areas in Nigeria.

Speaking further, he said that for decades, Deaf persons have been excluded from national census. This practice cannot be allowed to continue put in consideration the SDGs that requires every government in the world to leave no one behind in development, policies and programmes.

The group called on National Population Commission to as a Matter of national and international importance include, collect, analyze and report on Disaggregated data of different categories of disabilities.

NPC should involve Organizations of Persons With Disabilities in the upcoming national census exercises to ensure full inclusion and Participation.
